Jenny Leclair’s Technology Workshop

Ford Elementary
Thursday March 22nd 2:30-3:30 at Room 108

Objective:
At the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
* (Application Level) discover how to use OSMO genius kit including
words, numbers, and tangrams.

*(Analysis Level) differentiate student use by using the features of

OSMO in integrating technology across the curriculum.

* (Evaluation Level) decide to use STEM/Foundation dollars toward

purchasing OSMO add-ons like Coding with Awbie or Newton in your
classroom.

Lesson Plan:
Educators will come to the workshop with their OSMO’s and Ipads for
the workshop. I will have OSMO’s set up around the classroom to
show the different activities on display.

Introduction: (15 minutes) I first learned about the OSMO from a STEM
conference I attended through my Science Endorsement. OSMO is
an educational highly engaging learning tool that can be
differientied easily in the classroom. You can use them in reading
concepts, math number concepts, and tangrams for manipulating
pieces to make something. The OSMO genius kit is easy to set up
and students can begin using them immediately. In my graduate
classes, I am pursuing ways in which I can serve as an instructional
technology coach. I know as a teacher time is valuable, and
student learning is too. This program helps save time and students
are engaged by working in pairs. I feel that through this workshop
we can accomplish ways to integrate OSMO in your classroom. My
recommendation is that you have at least 2 OSMO kits to integrate
this program effectively.
Exploration: Set up and Play OSMO (20 minutes) I have set up OSMO
numbers, words, and OSMO coding for you to explore. If you
brought your OSMO I can help you set it up if you like. Please take
this time to play as a student and discover how the OSMO operates.
Then, we will get back together as a group to discuss lesson plans,
resources, and OSMO add-ons like Awbie, Pizza Company, and
Newton. My role will be as a collaborator for educators, and answer
questions as needed from the group.

Activity: Word Lists in library

Lesson plan: How to add your own lists in OSMO? Now, I am going to
show you how to add pre-loaded lists on your OSMO. You can also
add images to create your own lists. On the main page there is a
feature button called library to load other lists that you would like the
students to work on. If you have your OSMO you can look at this
now. This could be a spelling pattern, silent e words, or high
frequency words. When you click on library, download the activity
to your game. I’ll give you a few minutes to view the images and
add a few word lists to your OSMO.

Math with Numbers: OSMO numbers can take the stress out of math
and be a fun way to learn different ways to get to the answer. Math
concepts such as subtraction and addition can competitive and will
increase number sense. See this you tube video to see how OSMO
numbers is used. Which standards can be addressed in your grade
level?

Differentiation: Use OSMO for everyone!

Lesson Plan: Students can differentiate level of difficulty on the scale.
Set up each student on your OSMO and they can select their name
to begin playing. The level of difficulty makes the OSMO just right for
all learners. The words they spell increase from the basic level like
cat to words like dinosaur. In math, multiple ways of breaking up a
number is an option once students get comfortable with different
strategies that we have taught. For example, 10 + 3 +3 = 16. OSMO is
a wonderful technology tool for reinforcing concepts and use as a
station in class. OSMO coding introduces the basics of how patterns
are placed together and encourages students to analyze situations
in order to see how coding functions. Awbie is the main character
and at each level Awbie collects strawberries and students use the
pieces to show the patterns of which Awbie moves. Awbie can
move right, left, jumps and he collects points along the way. Awbie
coding add on includes all the pieces needed, built in tutorials to
guide students, and they are highly engaged the entire time. You will
just need to download Awbie to the app store. I highly recommend
that you try to play with one to experience how easy coding can be
for our younger students. With the genius hour, hour of code, and
increasing STEM we do every year, Awbie sets them up for success
early on to experience what coding is like in a fun way. I integrate
Awbie into STEM stations, or provide enrichment opportunities for
students interested in problem solving.

Evaluate Pros and Cons of OSMO: Let’s be REAL: Should I use

PTSA/Ford Foundation funds/STEM to purchase add ons in order to
get the most out of the OSMO and integrate it in my classroom?

What technology do you currently have in the classroom? I would

suggest to have a good balance of instructional uses.

Are you willing to designate two iPads without their case on for
students to use OSMO?

Conclusion I’ll be creating a notebook for us to share ideas on

OSMO so that we can create our own OSMO community.
