The Heimtextil Trend

At Heimtextil the mission is to display fresh new directions for interior and textile designs in
order to make them understandable, physical and intelligible. It is positioned as the main
trend setter for the industry. To achieve what they claim, they set out a panel of leading trend
consultancies from across the globe to produce fresh trends.

The whole process is more like a mission where the panel picks out its similarities and
differences on design insights. Every year they have a different leader for their mission and
this year the lead agency is UK-based trend and design consultancy Franklin Till, the person
being responsible for the concepts and designs of this year.

The aim is to produce designs that are unique, future oriented and trendsetting. This year
turns out to be the year of PROGRESS/REVIVE. On one hand celebrating science and
technology as the core drivers for innovation and on the other hand recognizing the
importance of looking back to replenish our cultural heritage and to learn from the past.

Progress

A new world in which science and technology are the driving forces behind innovation across
the design industry.

Generate Collision: In order to produce one off, unique and personalized designs,
designers experiment with emerging materials and technology. Playful printing and marking
techniques are produced in designs and creatives experiment with production processes to
determine the final look.

Engineer Nature: The convergence of science and the natural world uncovers
progressive synthetic solutions for a more sustainable future. The connection between
technology and biology produces new horizons in the textile designs. The aim is to present an
aesthetic and material direction that is derived from nature.

Revive:
A need to learn from the past, rediscover and revive the value in traditions and appreciate its
importanc
Exalt Purity: The theme celebrates minimalism, trying to come out of the over styled
synthetic world and get back to the basics and to reconnect with the land that we once
inhabited. The humble, the pure and the unadorned are emphasized and designers celebrate
raw materials as a luxury.

Rejuvenate Craft: The desire to engage with crafts reflects people's desire for

physical connections and community in the virtual world. The products are aimed to be
produced not for seasons only but that which can last for generations. Designers look up to
reinvent and bring back the crafts into textile designs.

Generate Collision in further detail:

The theme "Progress-Generate Collision" is aimed to
accommodate the demand for unique, individualized
products. In the modern era of mass production,
customization stands as a counter point. Against a
background of "cookie-cutter" designs coming from
anonymous factories, the desire to put your own
stamp on a variety of items stands out. Digital
technology is being given a playful make over as designers challenge the expectations of
order and control and the image of technology deadening one's own creativity. The
technological innovation is now enabling self expression and uniqueness and at the same time
mass producing the one-off.

Artistic expressions, aestheticizing technological errors, playful printing and marking

techniques and digital representations of artworks are some ways of producing unique yet
customized designs. The aim is to drive the collision of technology by experimenting with
novel materials and technology and also with the production process to determine the look
and feel of the final products.
To realize the need to look forward and embrace
progress in order to survive in the rapidly changing
times and to produce future sustainable designs is
important hence science and technology are being
celebrated as the core drivers for innovation.

Techniques such as paint being dragged, dabbed, pulled and splattered across surfaces to
create rainbows of uncontrolled color. Designers experiment with digital representations of
expressive ink and paint marking creating a visual contrast between digital order and hand
painted chaos.

Designers manipulate technological devices to create new visual data that generate "glitch"
artwork. The generative design programming acts as a natural designer. The aim is to
celebrate the beauty of error where designers explore and celebrate the randomness in pattern
and form.

Unique artworks that can be produced on the go, art that you can create on your mobile
devices. The Smartphone touch screen technology enables you to generate unexpected
technologically enhanced artwork. The designs produced look like graphic illustrations and
designs a retro feel.

The theme is aimed to grant the designer freedom and the way of expression. To let the
designer explore with technology and materiality and achieve unique yet replicable results.
