Host Instructions
Congratulations! You have purchased an exciting kit that will provide you a magical evening of fun
and excitement. Your friends will have a memorable evening that they will discuss for years to
come! Some careful preparation will ensure that your party goes smoothly.
Pre-Party
Choosing Characters
An important decision in planning for the party is to decide whether to assign characters to guests or to
allow guests to choose characters themselves. There are pros and cons to each choice, and that choice is
up to you. Many people enjoy choosing characters themselves, as this allows them the freedom to pick a
character they are comfortable playing. It also allows guests the opportunity to create a costume and to
feel more excitement about their part and the party. The host will choose a character also.
However, attendance for your party is necessary. Especially for certain crucial characters (less
important characters are listed as optional on the character list). If guests choose characters on their
own, they need to be fully committed to attending the party, or it may alter the outcome of the party.
Assigning characters may ensure that the most important characters attend the party and are
accounted for. Characters may be assigned by the host in advance or as they enter the party.
What to do if not all characters written in the script attend the party: The plot of the party will work
out well as long as the mandatory characters are in attendance. Once again, these are listed in the
character list. You or your guests can choose which other optional characters should participate in the
party. For characters that are not chosen, the characters can still discuss their clues relating to these
characters and can simply say that they couldn’t be at the party. This will add more to the subplots.
Decorating
While decorating is not necessary for the party, it can add an extra element, and allow guests to feel even
more in character. Ambiance is an important consideration. Table cloths, mood lighting, and simple
decorations can add quite a bit to your party.
Culinary
The party generally takes around 2 hours if guests are allowed enough time each round to talk to each
character, so having snacks and beverages can add to the guest’s enjoyment of the party. This can be done
in a number of ways. The host might ask each guest to bring an appetizer to share and provide drinks or
vice versa. If the host is ambitious, there can be a dinner in between Round 1 and Round 2 and dessert
between Round 2 and Round 3. Guests are encouraged to continue to act in character during the dinner.
If the host chooses to cook or provide food, keep in mind the preparation time, as it is important for the
host to remain a part of the event as well.
Preparing Materials
In the days leading up to the party, it is important that the host prepares the clues for each guest.
Investigative sheets should be printed and placed on a table for guests to use at the end of Round 2. It may
also be fun for guests to have the opportunity to vote for best costume, best acting, best appetizer, and for
solving the murder. This is optional, as is providing some form of award/prize for these categories. If
guests are told in advance that there will be prizes, it can lead to even more excitement, and guests may
work harder on costumes and acting.
The host must also places the Victim Sign, tape, and Medical Report in a concealed location chosen by the
host for the victim. During round 2, the victim’s clue card will tell them to find the host during the round
to learn the location of these items.
This particular murder requires a glass and carrot be placed near the victim’s body. Hoof prints may also
be spread around the body.
During the final round, the characters are listed (on the character list) in speaking order. This will be
helpful if not all characters are present.
During the Party

The host should be aware of the progression of the mystery during the party. While the host does not
need to read the mystery in advance, it is important to keep track of the conversations of others to
ensure a smooth flow at the party. Guests may move more quickly through the rounds if nervous, and the
host will need to encourage guests to continue conversations to ensure that guests are learning about
each character. Each character should have the opportunity to converse with each character. Generally
the party lasts 2-3 hours depending if dinner and dessert are served during the party.
Round 1
During Round 1, guests will receive clues providing backstory and will learn more about the backstory and
relationships of other characters.
Round 2
During Round 2, guests will continue to learn about the relationships between other characters and
build on the plot. After all guests have been able to converse with each character, the victim will be
notified on their clue card to find the host to learn the location of the victim sign and forensic report.
The victim will then put on the sign (with tape or a pin) and then can rejoin the party, or for the more
adventurous, can find a place to sprawl and allow guests to find them. Encourage guests to read the
Victim sign and read the forensic report aloud to guests. Guests will then have the opportunity to
complete their round 2 clues. After everyone has spoken with each character, the host will provide each
guest with an investigative sheet. They will complete this and give to the host.
Round 3
This is the Final Solution Round in which the guests receive an alibi to read verbatim. These are read in a
set order, indicated on their clues and listed in order on the character list. This is when all guests,
including the host, will learn who the murderer is. After each character has read their alibi (or
confession), the host can announce who correctly solved the murder. Prizes may be given if the host
prefers this.

Guest Instructions
Welcome Guests, to this most fantastic night of drama, romance, adventure, and dare I say Murder!
While acting is a must for this fun-filled event, no one is expected to pull off an award winning
performance. This is a party, and the purpose is for everyone to have an amazing evening!
The evening will be divided into three rounds. At the beginning of each round, I will hand you an envelope
with clues for the round. Please read the clues privately. Be wary of curious onlookers! The clues are for
your eyes only and will be necessary to solve the mystery. During each round, you will mingle with other
guests and discuss your clues and suspicions of others at the party. Be sure to stay in character! Not every
character may be so forth- coming, so make sure to ask poignant questions. Throughout each round, you
may elaborate on your clues and share as much or as little information as you desire. However, you
cannot blatantly lie and make up false clues to lead people astray. As the game continues, you will have
plenty of information about the relationships between other characters and their possible motives.
During Round 2, the murder will take place, and the murdered guest will be given specific instructions
during the round. After the murder occurs, guests will be given a final opportunity to mingle and ask
questions of each other. At the end of Round Two, the host will collect each guest’s guess as to whodunit
and the motive. The mystery will be revealed during Round 3.
Starting now, you are the character listed on your name tag, and you are to act as this character until the
end of the night. You are welcome to act your part as you see fit. Not every character should be the center
of attention. Let the murder mystery begin!
