Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Constructing shapes using circles

Content Area: Geometry
Grade Level(s): 10th

Content Standard Addressed:

MGSE9-12.G.CO.13 Construct an equilateral triangle, a square, and a regular hexagon, each inscribed in a
circle.

Technology Standard Addressed:

1aStudents articulate and set personal learning goals, develop strategies leveraging technology to achieve
them and reflect on the learning process itself to improve learning outcomes.
1dStudents understand the fundamental concepts of technology operations, demonstrate the ability to
choose, use and troubleshoot current technologies and are able to transfer their knowledge to explore
emerging technologies.
2bStudents engage in positive, safe, legal and ethical behavior when using technology, including social
interactions online or when using networked devices.
3aStudents plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information and other resources for their
intellectual or creative pursuits.
4aStudents know and use a deliberate design process for generating ideas, testing theories, creating
innovative artifacts or solving authentic problems.
4dStudents exhibit a tolerance for ambiguity, perseverance and the capacity to work with open-ended
problems.
5cStudents break problems into component parts, extract key information, and develop descriptive models to
understand complex systems or facilitate problem-solving.
6bStudents create original works or responsibly repurpose or remix digital resources into new creations.
6cStudents communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively by creating or using a variety of digital objects
such as visualizations, models or simulations.
7cStudents contribute constructively to project teams, assuming various roles and responsibilities to work
effectively toward a common goal.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The UDL principles enhances and supports students in the classroom in three areas, the what of learning, the
why of learning, and the how of learning. Students are supported in the what of learning by having visual
content adjustable, preteaching vocabulary, activating old knowledge with graphic organizers, and checklists.
Students are supported in the why of learning by providing autonomy for students to choose the design of

their board, using cooperative learning to support students, and use prompts to help guide students through
the process. Students are supported in the how of learning by composing it in multimedia including text,
video, and visuals, providing students with spell-check software, and breaking long term goals into short term
objectives.
Lesson idea implementation:
Students will be constructing equilateral triangles, squares, and regular hexagons inscribed in circles in
groups. They will do this by first describing the characteristics of each shape that make it that shape, this
information they will include on their discovery board. They will then through trial and error try to construct
the shapes. Once they master the construction, they can either create a video of them constructing the
shapes, 1 video for each shape, or take a picture after each step of the construction and then post the video
or series of pictures on the board. They will also post a brief explanation on how they figured out the
construction and how the way they constructed it lets them know it is the shape they claim it is. The project
will be introduced with an organizer which explains the expectations of each part of the discovery board.

They will start with exploring the characteristics of each shape. It should take three days, possibly less if
students only have to construct one shape rather than all three. Student learning will be assessed through
their discovery board that they will turn into the teacher. Depending on how easily groups are able to figure
out the construction will tell how future lessons and activities will be set up with supports that the students
needs to be successful. This extends student learning to a higher level since they will have to think not only
about the characteristics of the shape but how they can create those characteristics through construction
starting with just a circle. At the conclusion of this lesson students will turn in their board and depending on
the time students can explore each other’s boards. Feedback will be given through graded rubrics with
comments.

Reflective Practice:
Students will be forced to think critically about the concept, applying something they know to create
something new. This should impact their learning by giving them a more in-depth idea of the topic. Students
can discuss other shapes they would be able to construct in a circle or other shapes they could use as a
baseline to construct certain shapes. This would create a dialogue of what is required to construct a shape to
keep key characteristics. Students will need to use other technology tools to complete this project. They will
need a device to take video or pictures and possibly use a video editing software as well.
