INTRODUCTION AND ITS BACKGROUND

In this day and age, it is almost impossible for people to survive a day without

the use of gadgets. Every now and then, technology is always evolving. While time passes,

electronic gadgets keep on advancing. It is now 21st century and humanity is living in an era of

electronics. Gadgets have flooded man's life and have taken over everything. The time spent on

computers and electronic gadgets has increased vastly over the years. Widespread use of

electronic gadgets and heavy dependence on it combined with life, changes, and has given rise to

a number of problems.

Modern technology has gone too far. It offers the world so much more than it

could imagine. Apparently, as man would need something, technology will be there to make

their life more convenient, and more entertaining. What the people are holding right now in their

hands is part and parcel of it all. They may just be resting in each and everyone’s palms but

almost all details around the globe are laid with them.

This research aims to make everyone aware when it comes to modern

technology, especially the people in this century and also to give some tips and ideas about how

to use electronic gadgets properly and in moderation. It is important to know how to manage

your time properly when using gadgets. As wise people say, "Time well spent is an investment

of the present for a practical and abundant future". This topic motivates the researchers to know

the current status of the electronic gadget users. Out of curiosity, the researchers decided to

choose this topic because nowadays, modern technology is all around us but no one knows how

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Technology aids students’ expressions. Present what they have learned. They

can use software to make presentations and projects. It makes them more interested in the subject

and leads to better retention of information. With technological aids, students can make easy-to-

remember notes and a creative presentation of the information they have acquired. It will not be

wrong to say that application of technology has made a student’s life easy. It is easier for a

student to carry electronic gadgets than carrying big fat books to school. An iPad is less bulky

than a pile of notebooks or an eBook reader much lighter than a book. (Andersen and Becker,

2009)

Most of our youth and students are fond of going to the internet shop to use

computers, without knowledge of their parents what they are up to. They will ask money from

their parents that they have something to search in the internet for their project and assignments,

although others do so, but there are some who just make it as an alibi so that they can competent

skills with their peers through playing games online like for example war craft, battle realms, etc.

Local Literature

According to the article of Philippine One (2017), it is tragic but every time

phones do not have load or internet connection, everyone feels “disconnected” from the world. It

makes people feel like standing on a deserted island with other islands being far away and

unreachable. It feels they can do limited things, all because they cannot communicate and cannot

browse anything that people need to know right now. This is not to belittle what these

technological gizmos can do for us. They are important, but if they seriously think about it, they

are not that important.

Based on the article, when Jose Rizal tried to fight the injustices of the

Spaniards, there is no social media upon which to launch a campaign against Spanish friars. No

electronic gadgets to call other Filipinos to back him up and no search engines to get information

on the people he wanted to fight with, but Rizal succeeded.

Technology is important, especially in today’s fast paced world but do not

forget that there are other matters that are more substantial in this life. Having “real

conversations” with your children will strengthen a connection.

Too many people, especially young ones who have not known life with

mobile phones, the internet, or iPods, equate computer and communication technologies with life

itself. People spend a countless number of hours listening to music on iPods, watching YouTube,

texting/tweeting, and playing games online. These devices undoubtedly provide easy diversion

from life but when ordinary people are spending too much of their leisure time engrossed and

enthralled in technology, perhaps, it is no longer just a respite from life; it has become an escape

7
EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT ELECTRONIC GADGETS

from life. What is terrifying being more than escaping from life, computer, and communication

technology may have become life itself.

These technological gizmos do and will continue to play a potent and very

positive role in people’s lives. However, it should only provide fleeting deviations from life, and

significantly, be the perfect tools to enhance lives on this planet, but they should not become a

focal point of life. Technology is important, but it is not that important.

Foreign Studies

It is easier to store information: Computers enable better and more robust

storage of information. Compact memory devices have replaced notebook and a keyboard and

computer mouse are the new writing devices, what may have required hundred pages of a book

can be compacted into a tiny memory chip. It can take hours to write, but it takes only seconds to

type. Storing data has become much easier, owing to technology. (Parsad and Jones, 2008).

Technology has eliminated space and time constraints: Online education and distance learning

have given a new dimension to education and higher learning. Even if students are

geographically far away from each other, they can be part of one classroom. Though not

physically but virtually. Many educational institutes offer online courses, which eliminates time

and space constraints in acquiring education. Universities offer online educational programs

wherein students can interact with their teachers over the internet, access reference materials

from the university website and earn degrees online. (Trotter, 2008)

Local Studies

This fact has been stated (Duque et al., 2017) that over the last decade, social

media has transformed people’s thinking about relationships and connections with others and the

8

influences and persuasive power of online communities on how people think, organize, and act

politically.

Recently, the 2016 data on Social Media and Digital Stats in the Philippines,

the percentage of social media penetration has increased from 40% in 2015 to 47% in 2016. This

data means that social media continues to be an essential part in the lives of Filipinos who have

increased access to the Internet via their mobile phones and electronic devices. (Castro, 2016)

Bringing the electronic media into the schools could capitalize on the strong

motivation qualities that these media have for children. Many children who are turned off by

school are not turned off by one or another of the electronic media; quite the opposite. An

educational system that capitalized on this motivation would have a chance of much greater

success. Each medium has its own profile of cognitive advantages and disadvantages, and each

medium can be used to enhance the impact of others. (Chaves, 2008)

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The researchers used qualitative approach and aim to know the effects of

different electronic gadgets among Grade 7 Junior High School students of Fiat Lux Academe.

The researchers conducted a survey questionnaire consisting of 11 items. The purpose of the

study is to gather information on how different electronic gadgets affect the relationship between

parents and students.

Research Locale

The survey conducted by the researchers took place at the Hiraya Building of

Fiat Lux Academe, Don Placido Campos Avenue, Barangay San Jose, Dasmariñas City, Cavite.

The location was selected for the targeted students of the survey were Grade 7 students. Fiat Lux

Academe is the nearest location to oversight and has the numerous participants surveyed.

Research Participants

The researchers opted to execute a survey concerning the Grade 7 students of

the Junior High School department of Fiat Lux Academe, Dasmariñas Campus with the total of

60 respondents in relation to the effects of different electronic gadgets.

Research Instruments

The researchers used ‘researcher-made questionnaires’ for the survey

conducted that served as the research’s reference to distinguish the effects of different electronic

gadgets and to gather data needed for the study.

10
EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT ELECTRONIC GADGETS

Data Gathering Techniques

The researchers pursued a qualitative way to know exactly the opinion of the

respondents in terms of relationship between parents and students, especially those who use

electronic gadgets as a necessity for daily life, and to also give the respondents an opportunity to

assert their knowledge and share their own point of view about the said topic. The researchers

used printed questionnaires that were given to respondents personally. The questionnaire was

given to Grade 7 male and female students of Fiat Lux Academe. The survey was conducted

within a week or two. The researchers gave out questionnaires to 60 respondents. 13 respondents

from Grade 7 – Dysprosium, 13 from Grade 7 – Einsteinium, 12 students from Grade 7 –

Holmium, 10 respondents from Grade 7 – Gallium, survey questionnaires were also given to 9

respondents from Grade 7 – Francium, and 3 from the students of Grade 7 – Fluorine. The

researchers organized a plan to execute their survey properly. They divided themselves into

groups and directed a survey to different sections. The first 5 researchers conducted a survey to

the students of Grade 7 – Fluorine and Grade 7 – Francium. The next 3 researchers handed the

survey questionnaire to the students of Grade 7 – Dysprosium and Grade 7 – Einsteinium. The

last group of researchers, consisting of three members, disseminated questionnaires to the

students of Grade 7 – Gallium. The last researcher distributed survey questionnaires to the

students of Grade 7 – Holmium. The survey helped the researchers to gather information directly

from the respondents about the effects of different electronic gadgets between parents and

students.

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

Presentation

This study allotted self-administration questionnaires, answered by 60

respondents, based on the student’s experience in relation to the effects of different electronic

gadgets. The researchers made a survey to determine the effects of electronic gadgets to Grade 7

students and their knowledge towards the topic. This chapter presented tables on how the

researchers conducted their survey, and in what ways the researchers gathered information

directly from the respondents.

Analysis

Many of the respondents answered that use of electronic gadgets really affects

the relationship of the family, especially between parents and their children. Some hedger says

that in early stages of their life, they started to use electronic gadgets and this indicates that

family bonding would be seldom. The examinees also stated that they want to spend time with

their families rather than stare at their electronic gadgets. Therefore, the researchers conclude

that as the 21st century learners dig into their electronic gadgets and explore the modern world,

the communication between parents and students become more distant.

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATION

Summary

Electronic gadget is considered an important necessity in a person’s life today.

Apart from electronic gadgets, students’ relationship with their parents seems to be vague. This

study is a qualitative study which was designed to know the different effects of electronic

gadgets. The respondents were chosen randomly by the researchers and answered the

‘researcher-made questionnaires’ willingly from the survey conducted. The outcome

accumulated by the researchers were organized and presented through the use of bar graphs

shown in Chapter IV of the research. It merely shows the data gathered from the answers of the

respondents in each questions regarding the usage and effects of different electronic gadgets to

the relationship between parents and their children.

The focus of the study was to determine the possible effects of immoderate

use of different electronic gadgets between parents and students. The investigation was

supervised in Fiat Lux Academe, scheduled from December 2018 until March 2019. The

researchers tracked a qualitative approach with the use of printed questionnaires. The intension

of the survey was to gain comprehension from the respondents regarding the excessive usage of

electronic gadgets that affects the relationship of the family.

The respondents stated that their time and capability of using electronic

gadgets are more often than the usual use of it, and the time they spent with their family greatly

decreases because of the excessive usage of electronic gadgets. There are also factors that

affected the respondents; first, the lack of interest on doing outdoor activities that may also lead

21
EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT ELECTRONIC GADGETS

to obesity. Second, their time management would be different than what it used to, as they were

focusing more on their social media applications. Lastly, the small amount of time they spent

with their family. The answers gathered gave the researchers enough information about the

effects of electronic gadget, and what benefits and risks it may cause.

Conclusion

From the findings of the study, the researchers conclude that:

 The usage of electronic gadgets is a necessity and very massive. People use it frequently

as they get to communicate with their friends, family, and relatives. Because of electronic

gadgets, the society can easily check out the latest news and issues occurring anywhere

around the globe. Also, human productivity became more efficient and better over the

past few years.

 The students’ behavior is also affected since electronic gadgets are all over them. Putting

too much time on using such gadgets affects the attitude of the students and adapts

anything they see on social media sites. It can also lead to negligent manner of every

student. And because of that, many people, especially parents, are complaining that

electronic gadgets affect the way how a student executes things in comparatively to their

daily lives.

 The use of electronic gadgets helps in relieving stress a student feels due to school works.

It can also promote independent learning where the students can find useful information

from the internet. But some of the students cannot focus on their academic performances

as gadgets keep on distracting them; however,

 There are endless benefits that humans can get through the use of electronic gadgets but

there can also be tons of disadvantages if people did not use these gadgets properly. They

22
EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT ELECTRONIC GADGETS

equally both have positive and negative results to the students’ overall performance and

their time for their family.

Recommendations

To help improve the relationship between parents and students, the following

recommendations are proposed:

Establish communication with parents: One of the main effects of abusing the use of

technology is people tend to lose communication with the people around them which results in a

poor relationship, by interacting with family it can help people gain a more in-depth

understanding of the family members, which in turn helps improve your overall relationship.

Moreover, additional effective recommendations are as follows: Future researchers are

prompted to conduct the similar study in their own distinctive ways to provide more accurate

information and fathom a particular problem or situation, Supervision must be initiated within

the parents to guide themselves corresponding to the obscene effects of electronic gadgets, Data

gathered from the study should pave way for the students to have a decrease from utilizing

electronic gadgets, researchers should cultivate students’ minds by leaving them sufficient

knowledge in relation to the study and the evaluation should also encourage students to perform

well in further alternatives.
