What music does to our brains
Music plays an important role in our well-being. Most people have a favourite type of music
that they listen to. A good song can take your mind off your worries and cheer you up. In fact,
music causes us to feel a vast number of emotions: happiness, love, sadness, compassion and
affection. (1) ____ We can usually tell immediately if a piece of music is intended to be sad or
happy, because the limbic area of our brains responds differently to happy and sad music.
(2) ____ Firstly, there are emotions that we feel and then there are emotions that we
understand, but don’t directly feel. This is why we can often listen to sad music and still enjoy it,
because it doesn’t actually make us feel depressed.
People often like to study or work with music playing in the background. (3) ____ It is better to
listen to quiet, simple music or just the background noise of our environment. Low noise levels
work best to stimulate our creativity.
Music can also help us to do exercise. Research has shown that athletes perform better when
listening to their favourite music. (4) ____ We also use our energy more efficiently when
listening to music while exercising. A 2012 study found that cyclists require seven percent less
oxygen when listening to music compared to when they cycled in silence.
A study also found that learning to play a musical instrument has a positive effect on our brains.
Children who had three years or more of musical training had better reading, writing and
vocabulary skills.
The effect of music on our brains is so powerful that it is used as a form of therapy. Music
therapy, which uses music to help people improve their mental and physical health, is now a
common form of therapy in the USA and the UK for conditions like depression and dementia.
The patient listens to music, talks about it, moves to it and also produces their own music either
through singing or by playing an instrument. (5) ____
In summary, no one would deny that music is an important part of life. It helps us to experience
a wide variety of emotions, improves performance and makes life more fun and pleasurable.
