sequences and functions, continuity and differentiability. Successive differentiation, Leibnitz’s
theorem, Taylor’s and Maclaurin’s expansions, Indeterminate forms.

Partial Differentiation & Its Applications: Partial and total differential coefficient, Euler’s
theorem, geometrical interpretation of partial derivative, Jacobians, Taylor’s expansions for two
variables, errors and approximations, maxima and minima of functions of two variables.

Complex Numbers: De Moivre’s theorem and its applications, functions of complex variables;
exponential, hyperbolic, inverse hyperbolic, trigonometric and logarithmic.

Matrix Algebra: Elementary transformations, inverse by elementary transformations, rank of a


matrix, normal form of a matrix, consistency of system of linear equations, solution of system of
equations, Linearly dependent and independent vectors in R 3, linear and orthogonal
transformations, Eigen values and Eigen vectors.

Introduction to Fuzzy Sets and Fuzzy Logic: Fuzzy sets, concept of membership, Operations on
Fuzzy subsets, properties of Fuzzy subsets.

Tutorials

Elliptic integrals of first and second kind.

Reduction Formulae: Reduction formulae of the type  sinnx dx,  cosnx dx, 

Tracing of Curves: Cartesian and polar forms.

Differential Equations & their Applications: ODE of first order & first degree, formation of
differential equation, types of equation & methods for solving the differential equation-variable
separable method, exact differential equation, integrating factors, linear equation and equation
reducible to the linear form (Bernoulli equation).

Applications: Electric circuits, orthogonal trajectories.

Applications of Integration: Applications of definite integral to area, arc length and volume.

Infinite Series: Definition, comparison test, integral test, D’Alembert’s ratio test, Cauchy’s root
test, Leibnitz’s rule for alternating series, power series.

Multiple Integrals & their Applications: Double integral, change of order of integration,
transformation of variables for double integration, change to polar coordinates in double integrals
only. Triple integral, application of multiple integration to find areas.

Analytical Solid Geometry (Introduction only): Coordinate system, Cartesian, Cylindrical Polar
and Spherical Polar (Transformation from one to another system), Surfaces and their equations.

Tutorial

Langrange’s equation. Applications to the Wave equation, one-dimensional heat and Laplace
equation. Telegraphic and telephone equation.

Numerical Methods – Motivation, Errors, Truncation error, Rounded off error, Absolute error, Relative
error and Percentage error, Solution of algebraic and transcendental equations by Newton-Raphson,
Bisection, False position, iteration methods, Convergence of these methods.

equation, One dimensional heat flow problems using various techniques.

Solution of boundary value problems using Fourier transforms. Application to transverse
vibration of a string and transmission lines.

4. Z-TRANSFORMS
Definition, Z – Transforms of some basic sequences, unit impulse and unit – step sequences,
inverse Z – transforms.

5. INTRODUCTION TO MATHEMATICAL DEVELOPMENT - WAVELETS


Mathematical development of wavelets and their Applications. The idea behind wavelets, The

3. FINITE DIFFERENCES AND INTERPOLATION


Finite differences, Interpolation, Finite difference operators (Forward, backward and Central
differences), Interpolation formulae: Newton’s forward, Newton’s backward, Lagrange’s and
Sterling’s, Numerical differentiation, Numerical integration: Trapezoidal rule, Simpson’s 1/3 rd
rule. Simpson’s 3/8th rule.

4. NUMERICAL SOLUTIONS OF ORDINARY AND PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS


Solution of initial value problems of first order ordinary differential equations, Picard’s method,
Taylor series method, 4th order Runge – Kutta method, Finite difference methods of solving
second order partial differential equation with boundary conditions (Poisson equation,
Laplace’s equation).

5. SOLUTION OF SYSTEM OF LINEAR EQUATIONS


Direct methods: Gauss elimination, Gauss-Jordan and Crout’s LU Factorization methods,
Indirect methods: Gauss-Seidel and Jacobi’s methods.
