Exp.No: HOPKINSON TEST ON D.

C MOTOR-GENERATOR SET
Aim
To conduct Hopkinson’s test on a pair of DC shunt machines and to determine
their efficiency.

1. Determine the stray losses of the machines.

2. Obtain efficiency curves for the motor and generator and draw the curves.

Apparatus Required
S.No Apparatus Range Quantity
Required
1 Voltmeter
2 Ammeter
3 Rheostat 640 Ω, 1.1 A
4 Tachometer
5 Connecting Wires
Formula Used

1. Input from supply (Excluding Field) = V I watts

2. Armature Cu loss in motor = Im2 Ram watts
3. Cu loss in generator = Ig2 Rag watts
4. Iron & Friction loss in both machines = 2Pc
= VI- Im2 Ram- Ig2 Rag
5. Iron & Friction loss in both machines = half of this=2Pc
6. Im = I+Ig
7. Field cu loss in motor = V Ifm watts
8. Field cu loss in generator = V Ifg watts

MOTOR:-
1. Input =V Im watts
2. Total loss in motor = Im2 Ram+ V Ifm+ Pc
3. Output =Input – Total losses
4. Efficiency = (Output/Input) x 100
GENERATOR:-
1. Output =V Ig watts
2. Total loss in generator = Ig2 Rag+ V Ifg+ Pc
3. Input = Output +Total losses
4. Efficiency = (Output/Input) x 100

CIRCUIT DIAGRAM

Procedure:-
1. Start the motor through the starter
2. Adjust the speed of the set to the rated value.
3. The motor drives the second machine which is coupled to it as a generator
4. Adjust the field current of the generator so that voltage at the terminals of
generator is slightly higher than the supply voltage,(i.e.) the voltage at the
motor terminals.
5. Checked by a voltmeter across the switch before paralleling the generator
with the supply.
6. The polarity of the generator should be correct for parallel operation
7. positive to positive and negative to negative connection
8. When correct, close the switch. Increase the field current of the generator
and reduce the field current of the motor so as to maintain the speed of the
set constant.
9. At the same time, load the generator as required from low load to full load
values in steps.
