CHAPTER I
The way a student dresses can have an impact on school safety, academic success and
create a positive, productive learning environment (Lumsden, 2001). Polacheck (1996) reported that
School uniform policies have recently been enforced by many schools. Many believes that a
student who arrive dressed for success are eager and ready to learn. Students success is taken in
many forms—fewer absences, fewer referrals for behavioral problems, fewer expulsions, better
California (1997) said that not all parents were in favor of the school uniform policy some
does not agree while some parents think and feel that it "could help reduce problems associated with
dress". In STI College of Alabang, school uniforms lessen students’ clothing expenses for their day
to day use and it is also beneficial for parents for it enables them to save extra cash. School uniform
promotes effective learning for all students. Students’ concentration will be focused more on their
education rather than their wardrobes. If students can wear civilian clothes, they will be more
eager, concerned and excited on what clothes to wear to make them stand out at school. Wearing
of school uniforms also prepare students for their future career. If they get employed in big
companies, naturally they have to wear corporate and formal attires. With this, it will be easy for
them to adjust since they are used to wear formal uniforms when they were in school.

Hypothesis
Enforcing the school uniform is said to have positive effects to the ABM students. It can
hypothetically increase and improve the students’ academic performance. It can also decrease the
students visit to the guidance. And, an improvement to the students behavior inside the school
Theory/Background
Uniform is a type of clothing that is worn by students, teachers, police officers and doctors
to identify their position in the society. According to ProCon.org, the first recorded use of school
uniforms is in England in 1222. Students at one school were required to wear a robe-like outfit
called a 'cappa clausa.' However, it wasn't until the 16th century that modern school uniforms made
an appearance in recorded history. The uniform was thought to increase school spirit and loyalty.
In the United States, during the 1950's and 1960's the phrase "dress right, act right", was heard
throughout schools to diminish delinquency. In Philippines, school uniforms, much like Mexico,
are commonplace in public schools and required in private school, there are specified days when
students can wear civilian clothing, typically in special occasions like a holiday or last day of
school. There is usually no uniform in universities and progressive schools except for uniforms
CHAPTER 2
Having been at the forefront of school wear since its introduction in the 16th century, the
majority of private schools and education establishments set great store by their adopted uniforms.
At the UK’s most prestigious independent schools, uniforms often date back hundreds of years,
with today’s students expected to wear similar attire to those worn centuries ago.
It’s a similar story with public schools too, although these uniforms have seen drastic
change since the early 19th century. This suggests that the UK has one of the strictest approaches
to school wear of any country on Earth, and the statistics do support this — with four and five
Given that most schools in the UK are in favor of retaining school uniforms, this ultimately
raises questions about the positive impact school leaders believe uniforms have on today’s young
scholars. Here we’ll explore this issue further, and find out how exactly school uniforms affect
Encouraging good discipline. It may sound a tad naïve to assume that clothing can improve
child discipline, but many experts believe that school uniforms do have a positive influence on
behavior. In his research paper, dressed for success Scott Imberman conducted a study into the
effects school uniforms have on behavior and attendance, concluding that modest improvements
were visible in schools which enforce a full uniform. But why is this case?
Many school leaders share the view that, by wearing a school uniform, students gain skills
in presentation which ultimately lead to improved discipline in the classroom. Uniforms can also

improve attendance rates, and prevent students from forming gangs and groups that could result in
Boosting professionalism. While those critical of school uniforms have been quoted as
saying they offer a ‘quick fix for a range of problems’, it’s difficult to argue with the notion that
school wear does boost professionalism in the classroom. And it isn’t just establishments
themselves which benefit from this; school uniform experts, SWI , believe that students are
They said: “The act of putting on a uniform in the morning adds occasion to the day ahead,
much like a sportsman before a big game. Uniforms endow young students with a sense of
motivation and purpose, and help to ready them for life beyond the school gates.”
School uniforms act as a socioeconomic leveler. In the 16th century when the school
uniform was first introduced, its purpose was not to improve discipline or bolster professionalism
— it was to level the socioeconomic playing field and ensure that every child was treated as equal
in the eyes of their peers, something of invaluable importance in today’s independent school
system.
By ensuring that pupils begin their education on an equal footing, each child is judged on
his or her character, personality and academic merits — not on which designer brands they can
afford. This ultimately creates a more rounded and equal school community, and one in which
students are free to express themselves without fear of rejection and put-downs.
school leader hopes to achieve, and one of the simplest ways to do this, according to some

educational experts, is to adopt a school uniform. School wear generates a tangible sense of identity
and belonging among pupils, and subsequently helps to create a safe environment both in and out
of the classroom.
According to former education secretary, Ed balls, school wear can be likened to that of
the uniforms worn by groups like Scouts and Guides. Why? Uniforms, Balls says, offer a sense of
inclusion and community, helping the wearer feel a sense of acceptance, belonging and identity.
So, where do you sit in the great school uniforms debate? Do you believe they have a
positive impact in schools, or do you think it’s time for change? We’d love to hear your thoughts
on the issue.
“School uniforms have their historical antecedents in very old traditions. If understood
broadly, "students" have donned special garments to set themselves apart for religious (monastic
and priestly training) and economic purposes (apprentices wearing guild attire) for centuries.
However, school uniforms as understood in their modern sense are a manifestation of a more
general uniformization of populations apparent from about the early nineteenth century. This
workers and citizens to meet the requirements of industrialization, capitalism, and national loyalty.
Though historically some schools mandated uniforms for religious reasons or to maintain their
"tradition," by and large school uniforms have been ideologically inspired by a notion that bodily
control and regulated appearance beget social order, within the school and in society at large.”
“School uniforms/dress codes are a fact of life in most private schools and seem to be a
allowing students to focus more on their academics and less on the competition and peer pressure
Improved relations between teachers and students - When students wear uniforms, research
has shown that teachers see students in a more respectful light. In addition, students are perceived
to have a more positive attitude and demeanor when they are in uniform. This makes things less
stressful for the teacher and creates a more efficient learning environment.
Increased self-confidence and better preparation for the “real world” - Being a student is
a child’s job, and dressing for success not only improves the current learning atmosphere, it also
prepares children for their future jobs where they will likely have to adhere to work-related dress
codes. In addition, students who wear uniforms learn lessons in responsibility as there are
Fewer discipline issues - Students who wear uniforms tend to show a greater respect for
authority and order, creating an environment in which potential conflict can be handled in a more
A greater sense of community - Think of a sports team and the sense of pride instilled as a
result of wearing a team uniform. The same holds true for the school community where a dress
Increased school safety - When students are dressed uniformly, it is easier to identify non-
students and strangers, better equipping the school staff to handle questionable situations
accordingly.
Time savings - Dress codes simplifies the clothing selection process, making getting
Money savings - Uniforms/dress codes eliminate the need for parents to buy a large
number of wardrobe pieces and instead to focus on a few key uniform items, resulting in cost
On the contrary, they offer children the opportunity to creatively find ways for self-expression
outside of their physical appearance. This creativity can manifest itself academically, athletically,
artistically, socially, and through their own unique personalities. Ultimately, students benefit by
A greater appreciation for dress down days - As a reward for a job well done, just like a
worker who looks forward to a casual Friday, students who wear uniforms do enjoy the incentive
Freedom of Expression is Important. The biggest argument against school uniforms is the
fact that young people need to be able to express themselves in a healthy way, which they can do
through their clothing. School is the most social interaction that many of the students have in their
day to day life, which makes it the prime time for them to put their own personal style on display.
School uniforms don’t let them do this and force them to conform to the way everyone else looks.
Widely Opposed by The Students. Another large issue with school uniforms is the fact that
they are widely hated by most of the student body. A recent poll showed that 92 percent of high
school students are highly opposed to the idea of school uniforms. This amount of distaste for the
An Unhealthy Comparison. Putting everyone in the same clothes causes the students to
begin comparing the way that they look to others. The comparison is made easy because everyone
is in the exact same clothes. This is especially true for young girls. This is also a problem because
some clothes are not suited for certain body types. School uniforms preventing students from
choosing the most flattering clothes for them and make them even more self-conscious or
uncomfortable.
Free Public Education Should Be Free. If you require parents to purchase pricey sets of
school uniforms, it goes completely against the idea of public education. Public school is supposed
to be free, and supported by the taxes that are paid by parents. By forcing them to purchase these
“Uniforms give students a sense of belonging to a particular school and create an identity
As students grow and develop their own identities, they can begin to focus more on their
appearance and that of their peers – specifically when it comes to fashion. All too often, we see
Uniforms remove the distraction of these fashion stresses, and can minimize the difference
in socioeconomic status between peers. By spending less time worrying about fashion trends,
students can devote more focus on what school is really for – getting an education.
After taking a shower, waking up the kids, making breakfast, checking emails, putting in a
load of laundry, making snacks, brushing teeth, and combing hair, the last thing any parent wants
to do is have an early morning battle over what their child is going to wear to school that day.
Uniforms reduce morning stress by making the process of getting dressed a no-brainer. Students
know exactly what they can and cannot wear, leaving parents with only one concern — when is
We believe uniforms are an important way for students to grasp a sense of community and
belonging. By taking away a major point of competition, uniforms help students identify with one
another, fostering equality and compassion. This translates to more successful classroom group
activities. Also, school unity is promoted by a culture that focuses on the group instead of the
individual.

Multiple studies have shown that the implementation of uniforms reduces violence and
behavioral problems in schools. The school district in Long Beach, Calif., was the first in the
country to institute a mandatory uniform policy. In the five years following the policy’s institution,
overall crime dropped by 86%. Incidents of assault and battery dropped from 319 cases to 82, and
Conclusion
Wearing a school uniform makes children proud to be part of their school because it curbs
alienation helps to form class/school unity and differentiates between the students and teachers. It
helps to give children the structure they need, whilst not removing any creativity from them and
