INTRODUCTION

HISTORY OF PROSOPISJULIFLORA
India was rich in resources , fauna and Flora naturally. The country paid heed to more than
ten thousand varieties from plants. The country was covered with thick forests till the 18 th
century During the invasions the British into India , as a part of beautification and revolution
more than 286 acres of Indian forests were cut down. The British started converting forests
into barren landscapes and factory buildings because Madras was over the coast and the East
India Company found it more fees able to set up production units as the cost of transportation
was highly cheap. The state found that about hundreds of plant varieties became extinct. This
caused air pollution and environmental degradation in India especially in the state of Madras.
After realising that the states’s fauna life is heavily destroyed the British took several
initiatives to control environmental degradation.

Steps to prevent environmental degradation by the British

1. Implementation of Stocklom Act in India

2. New environmental laws were implemented in India
3. Preventive measures were taken to prevent cutting of plants
4. Local people were banned/ prohibited from cutting trees in forests
The British government realised that by preventing the cutting of plants and trees could not
control environmental degradation so they started
1. Plantations were started
2. Plants were planted in government areas
3. New plants such as the eucalyptus and ProsopisJuliflora (kaurveelam) was
brought to India.
Initially eucalyptus was planted all over the state but later due to climatic sinceconditions
eucalyptus could grow only in cold climatic regions hence as a replacement to eucalyptus
ProsopisJuliflora (kaurveelam) was brought into the state by Lt. Col. R.H. Bendome,
Conservator of Forests of Northern circle (Madras) requesting the Secretary of Revenue
Department of Madras to sow the Prosopis seed in 1876. Seeds were received from Jamaica
and sown in South India during 1877. In Northern India, ProsopisJuliflora was introduced in
the arid tracts of Rajasthan, owing to its rapid growth features and drought hardiness during
1877.

ADVANTAGE AND DISADVANTAGES OF PROSOPISJULIFLORA

ADVANTAGES OF PROSOPISJULIFLORA
ProsopisJuliflora has some important features in different domains likefood, fuel, fibre,
timber, resin, alcohol and medicine.
FOOD
After removing the seeds from its pods the cotyledons and embryos ere pulverised to form a
flour which is rich in protein and sugar mainly for diabetic people. Then its pods is used for
preparing breads, sweets, syrup and coffee. The fruits of this plant is also used to feed
animals especially for goats.
FUEL
The steems and branchs of this plant is used as fire wood and fuel wood they provide such
good quality of charcoals . The villages in southern districts of Tamil Nadu especially
Ramanathapuram district peoples their livelihood is based on this plant.
FIBRE
In the production of papers, paperboard and hand boards prosopisjuliflora is used as a fibre
source
TIMBER
For the purpose of fencing post, furniture, corrals their seasonal woods are used.
MEDICAL
The syrup is made form this plants ground pods is given to children showing weight
deficiencies and believed to increase lactation. Its used as an substance to absorb water
moisture and molecules which is preset at the dental equipment by the dentist.

DISADVANTAGE OF PROSOPISJULIFLORA
This plant is more commonly called as invasive species it has so many harmful effects which
affect the nature it created nagative biodiversity in our nation. The major effect of this plant is
its absorbs all the water molecule even moisture in the air its roots will penetrate to the
underground upto 56mts and absorb all the ground water and grown by its self its won't let
other near by plants to grow rather than this breads .
It also spread poisonous molecules which mix with ground water and also to the soil where
all the nutrients in the soil will decrease and the soil will not accept any other plant grow on
it . It became unfit for farming.
It spreadeasily does not require any type of maintenance actually this characteristic of this
Plant is not a good think by spreading easily its absorb all the water content where every its
spread it's leds to droughts and deplitation. If there is no ground water its starts absorb
humidity form the surrounding .Even a bird cannot build its next in this tree because its
produce less oxygen and higher amount of carbon dioxide which is toxic in nature .Most of
the domestic and wild animals are died by consuming this plant when the animals consumes
it the thrones of the this plant tears the vocal and the interstein of the animals and let them to
the death .Since it has high absorbing capacity of water even the moisture form the air, it
brought infertility to the animals sometimes in rare situations it brought infertility to women
too.Since this plant has some of advantages but comparing to its disadvantages it's hardly
spreads toxic in both air and water it deadly provides harmful effects

PREVENTION AND CONTROL METHODS OF PROSOPISJULIFLORA

PREVENTION AND CONTROL METHODS OF PROSOPISJULIFLORA

The plant cannot be totally eradicated in a shot period of time the eradication process
must be done in a periodical process . It takes minimum 4 years to completely eradicate.
 Uprooting methods must be used for eradication process ,
 The eradication must be done in the seasons of late monsoon and early summer,
 The plant wast must be kept separate area,
 The area must be highly dried and free from moisture,
 Biologists can be consulted to prevent the growth.
FINDINGS

 Water scarcity in southern district

 Droughts in delta region especially in river banks in the region of Madurai ,Thirunel-
veli, and surrounding districts
 Spreads toxicity in ground water
 Affects farming lands
 Caused heavy financial losses to the farmers
 Absorb moisture in air and even It brought infertility to the animals which sare tied
beneath this tree
 Even it make few women's to attain infertility
 Order passed by the Madras High Court Bench to eradicating this PJ weed in southern
districts
 Collectors of every district organise a separate committee for the eradication process
and to spread the awareness among the people's in rural areas

SUGGESTION

 A new law shall be made for the maintenance process

 A separate committee shall be formed and run by the government to control and eradi-
cation of PJ weeds
 Government shall offer special tender to the private bodies in collecting of wast of PJ
weed for the process of eradication
 Even more steps shall be taken to spread the awareness among the people ,
 The people those who are depend on the firewood can use root instead of using the
wasted stem of this plant, in order to control its spreading.
 The certificate eradication methods shall be used
 The plant waste shall be effectively managed by selling them to private companies for
minimal cost.
CONCLUSION

India is the land of thousands of temples were every temple believes a host and the history
derives a mythology. The fertility and cultivation in India is highly noted and praised by
different poets and film directors all around the globe. However the fertility and soil quality is
highly damaged and destroyed by a local plant named prosopisJuliflora.ProsopisJuliflora is a
common local plant found in the Indian Subcontinent.

India covers an area of 3.29 km2.. Out of which 51percent is regarded as arable land
comprising 16 percent of forests, 4 percent as permanent pasture and other grazing lands.
About 29 percent of land is characterised as land un suitable for cultivation.. this plant is
wildly spread in large parts of arid and semi arid tropical India. It is especially found in areas
with a maximum annual rainfall of 150 to 750 mm. . It spreads from north to south of the
country and is highly found in the states of Punjab, Gujarat, Orissa , Delhi, Andra Pradesh,
Uttar Pradesh , Rajasthan , Hariyana Karnataka, Kerala , Tamil Nadu and other neighbouring
states. This plant is capable of growing in varied soil conditions and in varied climatic
conditions. The plant growth could be traced in West Bengal and Bihar also.

ProsopisJuliflora plant is a spreading shrub which reaches the maximum height of 12

meters. The leaflets are much smaller compared to other plant and its spines are hardened and
paired. The plant highly affects the fertility of the soil due to which most areas become unfit
for cultivation. This plant also reduces the ground water level to a very high extent because of
which the fertility of soil is highly distorted , the ground water falls to a great extent and
prevent crops from receiving the required amount of water.
