MedPlus Medical Air Plant

Notes to Specifiers

General
Medical air shall be provided by MEDÆS Medical air plant reference

....................... capable of providing a net flow rate of ..................... l/min. @ ……… kPa with one

compressor not running (after dryer losses). The plant shall consist of ………………

air compressors and ……………… receiver/s and a duplex filter/dryer module.

Standards
The Medical air plant Duplex, Triplex or Quadruplex shall be designed to fully conform to the requirements of
UK National Health Service - Model Engineering Specification C11 and Health Technical Memorandum
No.2022 (HTM2022)*. The air compressors shall be of proven reliability and shall be driven by electric
motors to class F insulation and noise levels tested to BS4999. The receiver shall be constructed and tested
to EN286 or BS5169/1975 Class 3 Grade E or better. The control panels and electric installations shall
conform to the latest IEE wiring regulations and the starters are to BS4941. The standard range of MEDÆS
Medical Air Plant are 'CE' marked under the Medical Devices Directive 93/42/EEC with approval from
notified body no. 0086 (BSI). Under this directive, the specified products are classified as Class IIb Medical
Devices.

Air Compressors
A total of …………… screw air compressors shall be provided driven by an electric motor and incorporating
an air inlet filter and silencer. The compressor shall be provided with internal after coolers and auto/manual
drains. The compressor electric motor shall be class F type suitable for 400 Volt 50 Hz supply (other
voltages and frequencies available).

Receiver Vessel(s)
…………… No. off vertically mounted welded steel receiver shall be provided with access panel to enable
full internal inspection of the receiver. The total vessel capacity will be ..................... litres. The receiver shall
be protected by a pressure relief valve and fusible plug and shall be provided with an automatic drain with
manual by-pass.

Filter Dryer Assembly

Air delivery is via a duplex set of filters, pre-filter, oil filter, dust filter, activated carbon filter and bacterial
filter. Each filter/s shall be fitted with differential pressure gauge/s to monitor filter performance.
The air at the outlet shall contain no more than:-

Water 115 mg/m³

Dry particulate 0.01 mg/m³
Oil mist
Or Oil vapour 0.5 mg/m³
Carbon monoxide 5.0 mg/m³
5 ppm v/v
Carbon dioxide 450 mg/m³
500 ppm v/v

A Duplex desiccant dryer shall be used and controlled by a separate control panel and incorporate a dew
point alarm system.
Control Panels
A dedicated Motor Control Unit (MCU) shall be provided, for each air compressor, to house the isolating
switch, starter, MCB, ammeter, hours run meter. A dedicated Central Control Unit (CCU) shall house a lead
compressor selector switch, pressure switch, alarm and BMS contacts. Under normal conditions the
capacity of the plant shall be 100% system design flow with one compressor not running. A pressure
transducer shall sense the pressure and operate logic circuits within the CCU to switch the lead compressor
on or off, maintaining the design pressure. A digital readout of vessel pressure shall be located on the CCU
door. During periods of peak demand the lag compressor shall automatically be activated to operate in
addition to the lead compressor. In the case of triplex, if the lead compressor cannot maintain the required
pressure level then the lag compressor 2 is automatically activated.
The compressor(s) shall automatically shut down once pressure levels have been restored. In the event of a
lead compressor failure, the lag compressor shall take over and the first stage of the remote alarm system
shall be activated by the control panel. Should the primary control circuit fail, an independent system with a
separate mechanical backup switch will operate the compressors and also initiate a plant fault alarm.
The air plant shall have four stages of alarm conditions inputting to the alarm system as follows:

1. Plant faults caused by:

Control circuit failure.
Activation of any other safety device or failure of a selected compressor to run up to speed on time.

2. Plant Emergency caused by:

Low receiver pressure fault (0.5 bar below cut-in pressure of the lag compressor(s) or 0.5 bar above
cut-out pressure of the lead compressor). Dew point above -26°C at atmospheric pressure.

3. Reserve Fault caused by:

Reserve manifold pressure less than 50%.

4. Pressure fault caused by:

High or low pipeline pressure.

Building Management System contacts shall be: -

(Normally Open or Normally Closed contacts)
Plant fault,
Plant Emergency,
Reserve Fault,
Pipeline Pressure Fault.
Safety Information

Cleaning
The compressors, panels and components should be wiped over with a damp cloth frequently to remove any
dust or foreign substances.

Environmental Protection
Discard the components in any standard refuse facility. MEDÆS medical air plants do not contain any
hazardous substances except for the motor lubrication oil. Local authority legal regulations should be
consulted as to the correct method of oil disposal.

Electromagnetic Interference
Ensure any input and data cables are physically separated from other mains and data cables.
Electrical Details

WARNING...
It is necessary to check the integrity of the power source for safety at regular intervals. These
checks should be carried out annually and replacement power supplies used is necessary.

Power source and Current Requirements

See following table for compressor requirements. The dryer must be supplied with a 220-240V single phase
supply, fused at 5A.

Type of protection against electric shock

Class 1 (Mains supplied equipment using a protected earth)

Mode of operation

Installation supplement

* The plant must be installed in a plant room that conforms to HTM2022. If the air intake location is deemed
to be outside this scope or open to excessive contamination or pollutants etc, then extra filtration may be
required. This must be taken into account when specifying the type and location of air treatment equipment
