ABSTRACT
PROBLEM
This study was conducted at San Juan National High School involving the students in two
There are possible causes of problems of the teachers with regards to the Grade 10
sections Grade 10 – Mt. Makiling and Grade 10 – Mt. Banahaw. The study sought whether the use of
students’ low achievement in understanding the concept of light.
Strategic Intervention Materials will increase the performance of the students in Grade 10 Science
1. Lack of intervention to motivate the students drive to learn the concept of reflection of

of Grade 10 – Mt. Makiling were used as the control group (exposed to traditional method) while
2. Inappropriate instructional materials for the activities on reflection of light topic
Grade 10 – Mt. Banahaw’s as the experimental group (exposed to SIM). Students from the two
3. Insufficient number of activities for the topic- reflection of light in the Grade 10 Module.
sections used are of equal level of intelligence based on their scholastic performance and First
Grading Average. Both sections were given pre-test and post-test. The research revealed that there
is a significant difference in the mean percentage score of the two classes as the experimental group ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION
got the higher performance compare to the controlled group.
The following solutions will be attempted to solve identified problems.
1. An intervention material called SIM in Physics will be used by a section of Grade 10
Keywords: Strategic Intervention Materials, innovation, mean percentage score, traditional students during Physics class on topic about the reflection of light.
2. Administering a pre-test about Reflection of Light concept and post-test after using the
method
SIM.

INTRODUCTION
The 2014-2015 NAT result in Science didn’t show a significant increase. Most probably,
due to the time constraint experienced by each class. The Science Department of San Juan National
High School felt low moral for this result as the indicator of school performance.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK RESULTS

After giving a post-test to the topics a result was obtained. In the first topic Reflection of
Light in Plane Mirror a result shows a significant increase in MPS, the mean of Grade 10 -Mt.
Makiling in the Pre-test and post-test were 2.48 and 2.60 respectively while Grade 10 - Mt. Banahaw
where in the SIM 2.46 and 3.83 for pre-test and post-test respectively, which means that the results
showed the using SIM it has higher MPS than the traditional method. The traditional method got
52% of MPS while the experimental method got 77% MPS. While in the second topic, the mean of
Grade 10 – Mt. Makiling where the traditional method was used is 2.21 and 2.27 for the pre-test and
post-test respectively. However, Grade 10 - Mt. Banahaw where SIM got the mean of 2.02 and 3.48
in the pre-test and post-test respectively. It was noted too that the MPS of Grade 10 – Mt. Banahaw
was higher – 70% than Grade 10 - Mt. Makiling with 45%.
ACTIVITIES TO BE UNDERTAKEN Based on the research data gathered by the researcher, it was concluded that the use of
SIM in teaching any concept results to higher MPS which only proved the effectiveness of the
educational material in teaching science concepts.
