Subject : Mechanical Vibrations Max. Marks : 100
Subject Code : ME703 Duration : 3 Hrs
Instructions to the Candidates:
 Answer one full question from each unit.
 Draw neat sketches wherever needed. Assume the missing data.

UNIT – I
1. a) Add the following harmonics analytically and check the solution CO1 (10)
graphically. x1=5cos(3t+1); x2=10cos(3t+2).
b) Represent the periodic motions given in Fig.1(b) by harmonic motion. CO1 (10)

UNIT – II
3. a) Determine the parameters for an equivalent system model of the CO2 (10)
system shown in Fig.4(a) when x, the displacement of the mass center
of the disk measured from the system’s equilibrium position, is used as
the generalized coordinate. Assume the disk rolls without slip.

Fig.4(a)

b) The system shown in the Fig.5(b) has natural frequency of 5 Hz for the CO2 (10)
following data: m = 10 kg, J0 = 5 kg-m2, r1 = 100 mm, r2 = 250 mm.
When the system is disturbed by giving it an initial displacement, the
amplitude of free vibration is reduced by 80 percent in 10 cycles.
Determine the values of k and c.

b) In a spring mass system, the mass of 10 kg makes 40 oscillations in 20 C02 (10)
seconds without damper. With damper, the amplitude decreases to 0.2
of the original value after 5 oscillations. Find out:
