Dr Malhan, is an MS in orthopaedics, King Edward Memorial Hospital , Bombay after which he spent 7 years in some of the best
centers for joint replacement and resurfacing surgery including the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital, Oswestry, U.K. Dr. Malhan
completed the British orthopaedic training programme in the Oswestry-Stoke rotation (West Midlands) and was awarded the
FRCS(Orth). Besides extensive training in primary and revision joint replacement surgery he has also worked in the National
institute of sports surgery – UK and units dedicated to knee and shoulder arthroscopic surgery. He is well versed with advanced
techniques in cartilage and ligament reconstruction. Dr Malhan did his post FRCS (Orth) fellowship in advanced joint surgery at the
Freeman hospital, UK . He is presently Chief consultant surgeon at the Bone and Joint hospital, Mumbai and specializes in knee, hip
and shoulder surgery. The bulk of his practice in India is joint reconstruction and sports surgery and he attracts patients come from
all over India and overseas.
Super specialty experience -- A surgeon of international repute Dr Kaushal Malhan established the regional resurfacing and joint
replacement center for western India. He has gained international recognition for his pioneering contribution in the field of joint
replacement and resurfacing surgery. He has been in the forefront in the field of minimally invasive high bending knee replacement
surgery. He popularised hip resurfacing surgery and played a major role in changing clinical practice as regards hip reconstructive
surgery.
He is a strong proponent of tissue sparing minimally invasive surgical techniques for knee and hip joint replacement. His TPTKR
technique (tissue preserving total knee replacement) allows nearly three times faster recovery as compared to conventional knee
replacement surgery and has set a record of sorts with his 91 yr old patient of TPTKR surgery walking independently 4 hours after
having both knees done in one sitting. He made large contributions to hip resurfacing surgery with his more biologic surgical
exposure and his capitoplasty technique which allowed successful resurfacing for the difficult cases. He has to his credit the highest
number of Birmingham hip resurfacings in Mumbai. He brought in new techniques for revision hip replacement including the use of
trabecular metal to replace bone in large born defects.
In his push towards implants that remove less bone he did the first minimally invasive mobile bearing unicompartmental knee
replacement in India. This operation corrected end stage arthritis without changing the whole knee in patients with isolated disease.
This is a popular and successful operation today. He also performed the first computer assisted minimally invasive gender specific
knee replacement for female patients in India. Since then the gender implant has become synonymous with his name.
He introduced shoulder resurfacing surgery in Mumbai with the first Copeland resurfacing in the city. He has supported computer
assisted surgery not just to increase accuracy but also to make joint reconstruction less invasive. He practices advanced
arthroscopic ligament surgery and cartilage transplantation. He was trained in these at the centre for sports surgery ,UK and has
been awarded the intercollegiate diploma in sports medicine, Great Britain. He has received formal sports medicine training and
managed problems of high level sportsmen and women in the centre for sports surgery at Oswestry, UK and in Mumbai, India. His
special interest lies in the field of minimally invasive joint reconstructive surgery and has presented in over 150 meetings all over
the world including his recent presentation at a tissue preserving surgery conference in Australia. He has authored over 12
publications in national and international journals. He is a regular faculty on a number of knee and hip replacement courses
including the National arthroplasty course and Asia Pacific Arthroplasty Society among others. He is a post graduate teacher in
orthopaedics for the National Board and has been involved in the continued medical education programmes of orthopaedic surgeons
from India and other counties like Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, etc. His fame has earned him global recognition and attracted a lot
of overseas patients from the US , UK , Canada for joint surgery. He has been featured on a number international news channels like
Fox News, Australian Television, ITV, Sky News.

ACL reconstruction (Arthroscopic reconstruction): ACL reconstruction is surgery to replace the ligament
in the center of your knee with a new ligament. The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) keeps your shin bone
(tibia) in place. A tear of this ligament can cause your knee to give way during physical activity.
Arthrodesis: In arthrodesis, two bones on each end of a joint are fused, eliminating the joint itself. The
procedure is commonly referred to as joint fusion. Athrodesis is performed to control pain, to slow disease
progression, to provide stability to a joint that has been damaged by arthritis or muscle weakness, and to
correct deformity. Arthrodesis is also performed in individuals afflicted with poliomyelitis to reduce the
number of joints the weakened or paralyzed muscles must control and to treat progressive spinal deformity
that does not respond to non-operative treatment. Finally, arthrodesis is performed to enable individuals to
return to productivity after the initial healing period is over.
Arthroscopic debridement of Septic arthritis: Debridement is the process of removing dead (necrotic)
tissue or foreign material from and around a wound to expose healthy tissue. An open wound or ulcer can
not be properly evaluated until the dead tissue or foreign matter is removed. Wounds that contain necrotic
and ischemic (low oxygen content) tissue take longer to close and heal. This is because necrotic tissue
provides an ideal growth medium for bacteria. Though a wound may not necessarily be infected, the bacteria
can cause inflammation and strain the body's ability to fight infection. Debridement is also used to treat
pockets of pus called abscesses. Abscesses can develop into a general infection that may invade the
bloodstream (sepsis) and lead to amputation and even death.
Arthroscopic lateral release: Lateral release surgery is used to treat patella femoral syndrome and other
tracking problems with the patella. It is performed as an arthroscopic procedure. Lateral release is best for
patient with excessive patellar tilt.
Arthroscopic Menisectomy: Meniscectomy is the surgical removal of all or part of a torn meniscus
(rupturing of one or more of the fibrocartilage strips in the knee called menisci). A meniscus tear is a
common knee joint injury and can lead to pain and/or swelling of the knee joint.. Menisci can also be torn
during innocuous activities such as walking or squatting. Depending on the location of the tear, a repair may
be possible. In the outer third of the meniscus, an adequate blood supply exists and a repair will likely heal.
Usually younger patients are more resilient and respond well to this treatment, while older, more sedentary
patients do not have a favourable outcome after a repair.
Knee Replacement Surgery: Knee replacement, or knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to replace the
weight-bearing surfaces of the knee joint with an implant or prosthesis in order to relieve the pain and
disability of osteoarthritis. For more information on types of Knee Replacement Surgery please Click Here.
Diagnostic Arthroscopy: Diagnostic Arthroscopy is an technique to allow the visualisation of structures
within the knee joint. Diagnostic knee arthroscopy is surgery to look inside your knee joint. It is done by
using an instrument called an arthroscope. This scope is a long tube with a magnifying glass and a light on
the end. Diagnostic arthroscopy may be done to see if there is disease or injury inside your knee.
High Tibial Osteotomy: An osteotomy is a surgical operation whereby a bone is cut to shorten, lengthen, or
change its alignment. Osteotomies can be used to correct unwanted angulation or rotation of the bone. A
High Tibial Osteotomy is used to treat unicompartmental osteoarthritis of the knee. osteotomy is a major
operation, effectively fracturing the main weight bearing bone of the lower leg and surgically fixing it
afterwards. The rehabilitation is lengthy and involves a prolonged period avoiding all weight bearing
through the leg.
Meniscal repair: Doctors use arthroscopic surgery to repair the meniscus. The surgeon inserts a thin tube
(arthroscope) containing a camera and a light through small incisions near the knee and is able to see inside
the knee without making a large incision. Surgical instruments can be inserted through other small incisions.
The surgeon repairs the meniscus using dissolvable sutures (stitches) or anchors.
