SPOTLIGHT on WMELS
Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards provide a
common language and guidance for families,
professionals, and policy makers around early
childhood education and more. WMELS sets the stage
for the development of appropriate curriculum and the
use of assessment practices that support and promote
children’s learning and development. Its intended use
is to improve the quality of all early learning
environments and to guide professional development
activities and investments.
WMELS encompasses the “whole” child. It is divided
into 5 developmental domains: Health & Physical
Development, Social & Emotional Development,
Language Development & Communication,
Approaches to Learning, and Cognition & General
Knowledge. Each Domain contains sub-domains,
developmental expectations, program standards, and
performance standards.
More information about WMELS and how it is used will
be provided throughout the school year.

Classroom news
We had a few birthdays this fall. Riley turned 2 in
September, Kane, 5 in October, and Layne will be 3
this month. Happy birthday!
I re-did the art & writing center. It is more open
and organized. I added a new sensory table, new table
and chair, scale, & art and craft supplies. Right now it
is all about pumpkins! Feel free to Come on in and
check it out!
Reminders:
I will be closed Nov 5-9 for my paid
vacation.
Please be sure to send your child with a
hat, gloves, and a coat. We do go outside
daily.
I will be closed Nov 21-23 in observance of
Thanksgiving.

Do you know… Car seat
safety?
 How long does your child need to be in a car seat for?
 Have you checked your child’s car seat expiration date?
 Is your child’s chest clip in the proper place?
 Is your child rear-facing until 2 years of age?
 Do you buckle your child in their bulky winter coat?
Car seat law in Wisconsin:
 Children 4 years old or younger and weighing 40 lbs. or
under must be in a federally approved child seat.
 Children under 8 years old must be in a federally
approved booster seat until they reach over 80 lbs. in
weight, or are taller than 4’9”.
How to check your child’s car seat expiration:
 Most car seats expire after 6 years from the date of
manufacture.
 Dates should be printed on car seat.
If not:
 Check your owner’s manual or call manufacturer and
ask.
Is your child’s chest clip in the proper place?
 The chest clip on both infants and toddlers should be
placed at the level of the armpits on the child. It should
be fastened after straps have been tightened.
 If the chest clip is too high or low, then the straps on
the seat will not be sitting where they need to be in
order to hold the child in place.
 Having strap pads prevents the chest clip from being in
correct placement on child.
Why rear-facing until age 2?
 Rear-facing seats spreads the crash force more evenly
across the back of the car seat and the child’s body.
 It limits the motion of the head, reducing the potential
for neck injury.
 It keeps the child contained within the shell of the child
restraint.
How to tell if your child’s coat is too bulky to
wear under their harness:
 Put the coat on your child
 Sit them in the seat and fasten the harness. Tighten it
until you cannot fit any fingers between the child’s

chest and harness.
Without loosening the harness, remove your child from
the seat.
 Take the coat off your child and put your child back into
the seat and buckle the harness, without adjusting it.
 If you can fit more than one or two fingers between the
child’s chest and harness, the coat is too bulky to be
worn.
