Checking crankcase / maintaining crankcase breather

The 1st replacement is made on account of:

z Specification of the crankcase pressure for the engine type 2011, see Table T1.
Lubricating oil leaks can occur in all gaskets, but in particular in the radial shaft sealing
rings, due to excessive pressure in the crankcase caused by, among other reasons, a
crankcase breather which is not working properly. In addition, excessive crankcase pres-
sure can lead to lubricating oil escaping from the turbocharger bearing housing into the
compressor and turbine housing. This can cause damage to the turbocharger and the
whole engine.
If excessive crankcase pressure is detected, the cause must be found and the fault recti-
fied.

Work sequence

z Connect micrometer pressure gauge or U tube manometer (1) to, e.g. the lubricating
oil filler, with hose and hose clips.
or

Only use where the lubricating oil dipstick tube does not reach under the lubricating
oil level.

z Remove lubricating oil dipstick.

z Connect micrometer pressure gauge or U tube manometer (1) to the lubricating oil dip-
stick opening, with hose and hose clips.
Make sure that the connection is tight.

z Fill the U tube manometer halfway with water.

z Fasten the U tube manometer vertically on a fixed point (e.g. wall).
If necessary, another person must hold the U tube manometer still during the meas-
urement.
z Warm up the engine to operating temperature.
z Operate the engine at high idling speed or with full load.
z Read the pressure from the micrometer gauge or the U tube manometer.
If the pressure is more than the permissible maximum crankcase pressure, the cause
should be found and the fault rectified.
