Air France flight 296: A reflection

I. Summary

The said flight was a projected made by Air France; the flight was known for its embarrassing
collision as described in the documentary. It crashed during its air show in front of a crowd. The air
show resulted to be one of the most disturbing airplane crash; it was even caught on video.
Reviewing the initial cause of the anomaly took a lot of time; their primary source was the flight
recorder also known as black box which presents the recording of sounds in the cockpit and the
conversation of the pilots. The first error to be recognized was the required altitude of the plane.
Under the law, it was supposed to be 500 ft; however, for such air show, 100 ft was pretty much
considerable. But even for that consideration, the plane approximately reached 30 ft below the
ground; this was deduced because the average height of the forest trees were 40 ft, in which they
bumped as an obstacle. Those pilots were claimed to be flying too low and slow, and they also
failed to spot the said obstacle. Almost of the passengers survived except for those passengers
who were trapped in the plane and died of fire-related death; one of them was an adult woman and
the two were just children.
The captain of the flight contended that it was an error in the airplane system, in which it was
non-responsive to his control for a matter of seconds prior to the plane crash. He allegedly
contended that some personnel tampered with the black box; switching it to an old one.

II. Implication of what happened to aviation

Fly-by-wire technology is believed to be safely adapted by generations to generations. It

replaces conventional manual flight controls to decrease the possibility of committing human error
during take-offs.

III. Recommendations of the National Safety Board

The investigation leads to several recommendations that might decrease fatalities in the air
field; there were: to ban all the passengers in all demonstration flights, better reconnaissance by
flight crews and airline procedures should be reviewed to ensure flight crews could conforme with
regulations regarding altitudes.

IV. Personal Opinion

As it was shown on the video, there was a negligence on the part of the crews and staffs. The
pilots were not oriented with the landing spot in which they were not that familiar with, and the guide
map that was given to them lacked some illustrations. Clearly, things did not go according to plan.
They were pretty late to recognize the landing zone; worse, they maneuvered to the wrong spot. I
believed that the pilots’ grievous mistake was going below the regulated altitude of 100 ft for air
show flights. They went below 30 ft which could really bumped to any high obstacles such as trees.
From there, things could be deduced that they were really negligent and answerable to the fatalities
endured for that air show flight.
However, considering that the alleged switching of the black box was denied, it was prejudiced
for there was a highly considerable evidence and it could determine who else were liable for such
anomaly. Considering all the statements and dramatization, it could be deduced that human error
played a huge part for the failure of the Air France air show.
