PERVIOUS CONCRETE

Introduction

The main focus of today's construction age is sustainable development, whether it is in terms of material
used in construction or safety of environment from hazards developed from construction. A
construction engineer one should always think of preserve the water i.e rain water, storm water etc by
innovating new technologies. As more of the urban lands are covered by the buildings, parks, parking
areas and other types of impermeable urban builts. So, an idea is developed by structural engineers for
the use of pervious pavement which is built by the use of pervious concrete. Pervious concrete is a
special high porosity concrete used for flat work applications that allows water from precipitation and
other sources to pass through its void spaces, thereby reducing the run off from site and recharging
groundwater levels. The void ratio of pervious concrete ranges from 18% to 35% with compressive
strength of 28 kg/square centimeters to 281 kg/square centimeters. The infiltration rate of pervious
Concrete will fall in range of 82 to 720 liters per minute per square meters.

Typically, pervious concrete has little or no fine aggregates and has just enough cementitious paste to
coat the course aggregate particles while keeping the interconnectivity of voids. Pervious concrete is
traditionally used in greenhouses, sidewalls, parking lots, lower traffic or no traffic roads for more than
30 years which contributes to sustainable construction. Pervious concrete is recognised as structural
infiltration for providing first flush pollution control and storm water management. In addition to federal
regulations, there has been a strong move towards sustainable development. Sustainable development
is a development that meets the need of present generations without compromising the needs of future
generations. Previous concrete also qualifies for leadership in energy and environmental design and
therefore is sought by construction owners.

Previous concrete is generally not used solely for concrete pavements for high traffic and heavy wheel
loads due to low durability and high frictional stresses. Although, in many countries, previous concrete is
receiving renewed interests in urban areas to develop, implement and enforce a program to reduce
pollutants in post construction run off. The present work aims to analysis on pervious concrete and its
goodness for pollution control and storm water management in urban applications to achieve
sustainability which is much disturbed by the constructions.
