CH 4002 Chemical and Biomedical Engineering Design Project I

Semester 1 2009

Instructor:

Asst. Prof. Kunn Hadinoto Ong

Office: N1.2 B2-31
Email: kunnong@ntu.edu.sg

Office Hours:

Please set-up an appointment by email

Lectures: Tutorials:

Mon 13:30-14:30 (CBE LT) 1 hour/week (CBE/BIE computer labs)

Thu 14:30-16:30 (CBE LT)

Objectives:

The main objective of the first design course is to introduce the students to a systematic approach
in designing chemical engineering processes with an emphasis on the conceptual issues that are
fundamental to the process creation.

Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:

 Apply a systematic procedure for the conceptual design of a limited class of chemical
engineering unit operations (i.e. reactor, separator, heat exchanger)
 Develop a process flow sheet involving various unit operations to achieve the process
objective
 Utilize process simulation software (i.e. HYSYS) as a design tool
 Perform engineering economics calculation to determine economic feasibility and
profitability of a process

Recommended Textbooks:

 R. Smith, Chemical Process Design and Integration, John Wiley & Sons, New York,
2004.
 W. D. Seider, J. D. Seader, D. R. Lewin, and S. Widagdo, Product & Process Design
Principles: Synthesis, Analysis, and Evaluation, 3rd Ed., John Wiley & Sons, New York,
2009 (recommended for purchase).

1
Grades Distribution:

Group projects (4) & tutorial exercises 15%

Midterm exam (1) 25%
Final exam 60%
Bonus assignments (4) 0% ≤ Bonus ≤ 6%

Note: Midterm exam will be open-book, closed-notes, Final exam closed-book, closed-notes

Group Projects:

Project #1: Material & energy balances

Project #2: Reactor design
Project #3: Distillation column design
Project #4: Heat exchanger network design

The group consists of 4-5 students/group from the same tutorial section

Note:

For CH 4003 Design II: 2 groups will be combined into 1 group consisting 8-10 students

Tutorials:

 The weekly tutorial sessions serve as computer training sessions on how to use process
simulator software HYSYS in chemical process design
 The tutorial materials are available in every computer in both CBE and BIE’s B4-02 computer
labs. Alternatively, the students can install the CD containing the tutorial materials from W.D.
Seider’s textbook to their personal computers (or download from Wiley publisher website)
 The tutorial materials can be accessed by selecting ‘Using Process Simulators in Chemical
Engineering’ under programs. Alternatively, double click an orange icon named
’Encyclopedia’ in the desktop
 The tutorials are designed to be independent-learning, where the students follow the detailed
step-by-step operations provided by the HYSYS instructional software
 The students are strongly encouraged to work on the tutorial materials before attending the
tutorial session and utilize the tutorial sessions mainly to clarify any questions regarding the
tutorial materials
 The students will be asked to submit the answers to the tutorial questions (i.e. tutorial
exercise) at the end of certain tutorial sessions
