Maitre-2 bus services to connect India and Bangladesh


Maitre-2, a second passenger bus to Kolkata via Dhaka was flagged off from Agartala,
Tripura on January 19, 2018.
i. The bus was flagged off by Tripura MLA Ratan Das and Tripura Road Transport
Corporation Chairman RajendraReang.
ii. This bus service is expected to strengthen trans-border relationship
between India and Bangladesh and enhance people-to-people connectivity.
iii. The distance between Kolkata and Agartala is about 1650 km, by Indian route. This distance
is cut to 515 km if the buses go through Dhaka.

Tripura Current Affairs - March 2018


Tripura Fisheries Minister Khagendra Jamatia passes away
On 2nd March 2018, Khagendra Jamatia, Tripura Fisheries and Cooperation minister,
passed away after being diagnosed with blood cancer recently, at a hospital in New Delhi.
i. Khagendra Jamatia was 64 years old. He was CPM candidate from the Krishnapur constituency
in the assembly election held on 18th February 2018.
ii. He joined CPM in 1983. He served as a party MLA for six continuous terms. He was also a
minister for two terms.

Tripura to Set up Crime Wing of State Police


Tripura State Government has decided to set up a well-equipped Crime Wing under the state
police to prevent unlawful activities such as drug and narcotics peddling.

i. Tripura’s Law Minister Ratan Lal Nath has stated that the new Crime Wing under Tripura’s
State Police will be modelled on lines of Delhi Police's crime branch.
ii. It is to be noted that curbing crime in the state and restoring the rule of land was one of the
promise made in Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP's) election manifesto.
iii. BJP’s Tripura President, Biplab Kumar Deb took oath as the 10th Chief Minister of
Tripura on March 9, 2018

Biplab Deb to be the new Tripura Chief Minister


On 6th March 2018, Biplab Kumar Deb was named the new chief minister of Tripura.
i. Biplab Deb was elected leader of the BJP legislature party in Tripura. He will take charge as
Chief Minister of Tripura before Governor Tathagata Roy.

Tripura CM Biplab Kumar Deb launches state component of PMKVY in Agartala
On April 7, 2018, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb launched state component of Pradhan
Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) in Agartala.
i. PMKVY is a skill development initiative of Government of India aimed at encouraging
aptitude towards employable skills and increasing working efficiency of probable and
existing daily wage earners, by providing quality training to them.
ii. Tripura has thereby become the first North East Indian state to implement state
component of Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) through Directorate of Skill
Development (DSD).

Tripura Govt sanctions Rs 50 crore for IIIT at Bodhjungnagar


On April 12, 2018, Tripura State Government approved Rs 50.67 crore to set up an Indian
Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) at Bodhjungnagar, located 15 km away from
Agartala.
i. Bodhjungnagar is one of North Eastern region's biggest industrial zones.
ii. Decision to set up IIIT at Bodhjungnagar in Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode was taken in
2012. However, the project could not take off due to non clearance of funds from the previous
Left Front government.
iii. The institute would be set up on 52.08 acres land and the total project cost would be
Rs 128 crore.

NITI Forum for North East holds first meeting in Agartala


First meeting of newly constituted ‘NITI Forum for North East’ was held in Agartala, Tripura on
April 10, 2018.
i. First meeting of NITI Forum for North East was chaired by Vice-Chairman of NITI Aayog -
Rajeev Kumar and the Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region
(DoNER), Jitendra Singh.

ii. It was constituted with an aim to ensure sustainable economic growth of the North
Eastern Region (NER) of India and review the development status in the North Eastern
region at periodic intervals.

Tripura Current Affairs - May 2018


The Union Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) has sanctioned
two projects worth Rs 48 crore to boost tourism in Tripura
On 17th May 2018, the Union Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER)
sanctioned two projects worth Rs 48 crore to enhance tourism in Tripura.
i. The funds will be utilised to repair and develop two roads that link two tourism spots -
Chabimura and Tirthamuk - at Amarpur sub-division in Gomati district.
ii. Chabimura is known for its rock carvings. Tirthamukh is the confluence of Raima and Sarma
rivers. It is considered a sacred spot.
iii. The projects were approved at a meeting of the North East Special Infrastructure Development
Scheme held in New Delhi recently.

Tripura reserves 10% police posts for women


On 20th May, The Tripura Government announced that 10% of all police force will be reserved
for women in a meeting chaired by the Chief Minister of Tripura Mr. Biplab Kumar Deb with an
objective to encourage women to participate and deal more efficiently with crimes related to
them.
i.This decision was taken with close observation to Supreme Court’s decision with the Nirbhaya
gang rape case of 2012 and will be subjected to increase in future if necessary.
ii. Seven all-women police stations across the state, including two in Agartala has been set up
iii. Apart from this a PRAYAAS committeein every police station consisting of former policemen,
veterans and politicians has been formed to deal with policing.

Tripura sins MoU with Spicejet Merchandise to boost pineapple export


On 19th May, state-run Tripura Horticulture Corporation Limited (THCL) signed a memorandum of
understanding (MoU) with Spicejet Merchandise Pvt Ltdto boost pineappe export.To provide
pineapples to the majority of the country and help the farmers profit ratio.
i. The'Queen' variety of pineapples is considered as the pride of Tripura and approximately, more
than 1 lakh metric of 'Queen' and 'Kue' pineapple is produced in Tripura annually.
ii. This MOU was done to export the fruit not only to the rest of the country but also to
the middle-east.

President inaugurates 73 km long National Highway in Tripura
On June 7, 2018, President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated 73km long National Highway
in Tripura.This national highway will connect Matabati to Udaipur-Sabroom.

Tripura starts GPS (Global Positioning System) and wireless based 24×7 mobile policing
service
On 16th June 2018, the Tripura government launched the GPS (Global Positioning
System) and wireless based 24×7 “mobile policing” service to control crime, mainly against
women.
i. Police chief Akhil Kumar Sukhla said that, the complete service will be monitored and directed
using GPS and wireless based technology.
ii. As per the ‘mobile policing’ service, a police van or a small vehicle with police personnel will be
patrolling 24*7 in their assigned zone.

Gujarat and Tripura ranked first according to Report on the Composite Water
Management Index : NITI Aayog
On June 15, 2018, NITI Aayog has prepared a report on Composite Water Management
Index (CWMI). The Report was launched today by Shri Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Minister for Road
Transport & Highways, Shipping and Water Resources and Dr. Rajiv Kumar, Vice Chairman, NITI
Aayog. Shri Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog and Secretaries/ senior officials of Ministry of Water
Resources, Drinking Water & Sanitation and Rural Development.With an Objectives to enable
cooperative and competitive federalism.
i. This would help enabling the states and Central ministries/Departments to formulate and
implement suitable strategies for better management of water resources.
ii. Gujarat as number one in the reference year (2016-17), followed by Madhya Pradesh, Andhra
Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra.
iii.In North Eastern and Himalayan States, Tripura has been adjudged number 1 in 2016-17
followed by Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Assam

West Bengal Governor K N Tripathi to hold additional charge of Tripura


On 7th June 2018, West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi was given additional charge

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb inaugurates traditional ‘Kharchi Puja’
On 20th July 2018, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb inaugurated the 7 day long “Kharchi
Puja” at Puran Habeli, in Tripura.
i. Kharchi Puja is an annual festival to cleanse the sins of mortal souls. It was originally a Hindu
tribal festival. Now it is observed by all communities and religion.
ii. It features 14 deities: Shiva, Durga, Vishnu, Laxmi, Saraswati, Kartik, Ganesha, Brahma,
Abadhi (God of water), Chandra, Ganga, Agni, Kamdev and Himadri (Himalaya).
iii. Kharchi Puja started with a procession. The deities and priests were escorted by the Tripura
Police personnel.
iv. A guard of honour was presented for the chief royal priest known as “Raj Chantaia”.
v. Devotees joined the procession on the way to Howrah river for the customary bathing.The
worship began with the dipping of 14 deities in the Howrah river. It was followed by the sacrifice
of 108 animals. All these are done at government expense.
vi.The Tripura government is conducting the Kharchi Puja every year as per the 1949 merger
agreement with the royal family.
vii. Kharchi Puja is the biggest festival for the Hindu tribals in the northeastern region.Every year,
nearly 10-15 lakh people participate in the festival from all over India and Bangladesh.

Agartala Airport to be named after Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya Kishore


On 4th July 2018, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided to name the
Agartala airport in Tripura after Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya Kishore, the erstwhile ruler of
Tripura.
i. The airport was constructed in 1942. Land for the airport was donated by Maharaja Bir Bikram
Manikya Kishore.
ii. People of Tripura and the Tripura government were demanding since a long time to rename the
airport to honour Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya Kishore.
iii. Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya Kishore came to the throne of the erstwhile Tripura princely
state in 1923.
iv. This airport is the second busiest airport in the north east. It offers main air connectivity to
Tripura.

First Meeting of India-Bangladesh Joint Committee on Border HaatsHeld in Agartala


On 22-23 July 2018, The first meeting of the India-Bangladesh Joint Committee on Border
Haats was held in Agartala, Tripura.The meeting reveal about the positive impact of Border Hatts
on the livelihoods of the people living in areas around the Haats.
i. Other issues related to review of operations of the four functional Border Haats and suggestions
for improvement, timeline for setting up the six additional Border Haats.
ii. The next meeting would be held in Bangladesh on mutually agreed dates.
iii. The Joint Committee visited the Border Haat at Kamlasagar (Sipahijala District, Tripura) –
Tarapur (Brahmanbaria, Bangladesh).
iv. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Border Haats between India and Bangladesh
signed on 8th April 2017 provides for establishment of a Joint Committee to review the border
haats operations, suggest modifications in the operational modalities and propose new locations of
Border Haats.

Tripura Current Affairs - August 2018

2 new Space Research Technology Centres to come up in Jammu and Agartala


On August 13, 2018, the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North
Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra
Singh announced that Jammu will be the first city in North India to get a full-fledged Space
Technology Research Centre.
i. It would be devoted to research, academics and post-graduation study and would be
under Central University Jammu.
ii. Another Space Technology Research Centre will be set up in Agartala, Tripura in the Northeast.
iii. It would work under National Institute of Technology (NIT) Agartala.

Biplab Kumar Deb inaugurates ISRO’s Technology Incubation Centre in Agartala


On 18th September 2018, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb inaugurated the Indian Space
Research Organisation (ISRO) Technology Incubation Centre in Agartala, through video-
conferencing from Bengaluru.
i. The ISRO Technology Incubation Centre has been developed at the campus of National Institute
of Technology (NIT), Agartala.
ii. It was launched at the 1st edition of ‘SPACETRONICS’ organised by the India Electronics and
Semiconductor Association (IESA).
iii. ISRO would incubate start-ups that could build applications, provide services and products that
can be used internally and utilise opportunities globally.

Tripura Current Affairs - November 2018


Tribunal set up to decide on ban on two Tripura militant groups: Home Minister
On November 16, 2018, the Home Ministry set up a tribunal to decide on banning 2 militant
groups from Tripura.
i.The tribunal is headed by Delhi High Court Judge Justice Suresh Kait.
ii.This was set up under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
iii.The 2 concerned militant groups are: the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and All
Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF).
Background:
On October 2018, a fresh ban of five years were imposed on the two insurgent groups of Tripura
by the central government last month for their “violent and subversive activities”.

3-day 7th International Tourism Mart held for the first time in Tripura
On 22nd to 24th November, 2018, the 3-day 7th International Tourism Mart (ITM) was held for
the first time at the Pragna Bhawan in Agartala, Tripura. It was inaugurated by the Governor of
Tripura, Prof. Kaptan Singh Solanki.
Objective:
To highlight the tourism potential of the North Eastern region in the domestic and international
markets.
Key Points:
i. It was organized by:
 The Ministry of Tourism, Government of India and
 The Department of Tourism, Government of Tripura and the North Eastern States.

ii. The theme for this year’s ITM is – “Adventure tourism”.


iii. The 3-day event was attended by a total of 41 foreign delegates from 18 countries and had an
estimated budget of Rs 2.6 crore.
iv. The International Tourism Marts are organized in the North Eastern States and West Bengal on
rotation basis. The earlier editions of this mart have been held in Guwahati , Tawang, Shillong,
Gangtok and Imphal.
v.India attained 40th Rank in the index of Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index 2017.

♦ The North East Region of India comprises of 8 states, namely- Arunachal Pradesh, Assam,
Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim.

Centre cleared appointments of Chief Justices of 4 High Courts


On November 10, 2018, the Central government cleared the appointment of Chief Justices
of 4 High Courts namely: Allahabad, Patna, Madhya Pradesh and Tripura.
i. The most senior judge of the Rajasthan High Court, Justice Govind Mathur, was appointed as
the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.
ii. The most senior judge of the Allahabad HC, Justice A P Sahi, was appointed the Chief Justice
of Patna HC.
iii. The senior-most judge of the Madhya Pradesh HC, Justice S K Seth, was appointed as the
Chief Justice of the MP High Court.
iv. The most senior judge of Himachal HC, Justice Sanjay Karol, was appointed as the Chief
Justice of Tripura HC.
v. Also, Justice M R Shah, who has been the CJ of Patna HC has been elevated as a Supreme
Court judge.

Sanjay Karol sworn in as new Chief Justice of Tripura HC


On 14th November 2018, Justice Sanjoy Karol was sworn in as the 4th Chief Justice of the Tripura
High Court.
i. Tripura Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki administered the oath of office and secrecy to Justice
Sanjoy Karol.
ii. Earlier, Sanjoy Karol was a judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. He replaces Justice Ajay
Rastogi who was promoted as a judge of the Supreme Court.
iii. Sanjoy Karol became a judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in 2007.

Tripura government to acquire 26% shares of Palatana thermal project from IL&FS
Tripura government will start a dialogue for the purchase of 26 % equity shares of the Palatana
gas thermal power project from the Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services (IL&FS).

Key Points:
i. Palatana gas thermal power project is a 726.6 mw gas-based power project. It is run by ONGC
Tripura Power Company (OTPC). It was started in 2014 as a joint venture between ONGC, IDFC,
IL&FS and Tripura government.
ii. Tripura owns 0.5 % share in the project. IL&FS will be selling its entire 26 % in the Palatana
thermal project.
iii. Tripura is in the process of opening a dialogue with IL&FS to buy the 26 % shares. IL&FS had
purchased 26 % equity shares at Rs 2.91 billion. Now, the equity shares are estimated at Rs 3
billion.
iv. Ministry of power allocated over 58 % energy from the Palatana project to north-eastern
states.
v. From Tripura’s share in the project’s output, Tripura government is selling 160 mw to
Bangladesh on a daily basis.
