Machine Drawing-I
(ME 391)

Schematic product symbols for standard components in


mechanical, electrical and electronic systems, welding symbols
and pipe joints;
Orthographic projections of machine elements, different sectional
views- full, auxiliary sections; Isometric projection of
components;
Assembly and detailed drawings of a mechanical assembly, such
as a Plummer block, tool head of a shaping machine, tailstock of a
lathe, welded pipe joints indicating work parts before welding, etc.

(At least six sheets must be drawn)

Course Outcome:
COS ME 391.
The incumbent will be able to demonstrate the knowledge/skill on schematic product
symbols for standard components in mechanical, electrical and electronic systems,
ME 391. 1
welding symbols and pipe joints, keeping in mind technical, economical, safety and legal
issues.
The incumbent will be able to define, illustrate and to draw orthographic projections of
ME 391. 2 machine elements, different sectional views analyzing and interpreting data using
modern engineering tools and techniques leading to decision making in real time.
The incumbent will be able to apply the skill/knowledge on isometric projection of
ME 391. 3 components adhering to the rules and regulations of safety, social, legal aspects, and
cultural issues applicable to professional engineering practice.
The incumbent will be able to assembly and detailed drawings of a mechanical
assembly, such as a Plummer block, tool head of a shaping machine, tailstock of a
ME 391. 4
lathe, welded pipe joints indicating work parts before welding, etc. with an open mind for
life-long learning and for the benefit of the organization as well as for the self.
The incumbent will be able to demonstrate and to interact effectively, via team-based
laboratory activities, on a social and interpersonal level with fellow students, and will
ME 391. 5
demonstrate the ability to divide up and share task responsibilities to complete
assignments.
The incumbent will be able to use different modern software lie AutoCAD, CATIA to

Assignment 1:
Draw the full sectional assembled view of the protected type
flange coupling using metric threaded hexagonal headed bolt
with square nut. Only the socket end has been depicted. Show
the keys on the assembly, which are at a phase of 90.
Assignment 2:
In this figure certain surface symbols have been shown. This also gives an idea of auxiliary view. Copy this
figure knowing the relevance.

Schematic product symbols and constructional features of pipe joints

1. Study the different symbolic representation of pipe joints and realize the physical form of the same.

2. Study of different pipe joints (Nipple joint, Socket joint, Taper Pipe joint, Welded pipe joints, Flanged pipe joint,
spigot and socket pipe joint, hydraulic pipe joints, Union joints, Expansion joints with all important proportional
dimensions) and fittings.
3. Fig. 1 depicts a hydraulic joint with proper dimensions. Copy the figure knowing fully well the detailed
constructional feature.

1. Draw the assembly drawing of the plummer block.
2. The details of a lathe tail stock are given hereunder. Draw the assembled sectional view of the tail stock and
balloon them. Also make a complete list of material. (See P. S. Gill pp 665: 17th edition, 2001)
3. The detail of a Clapper box is given hereunder. Draw the assembled full sectional view of the Clapper box in the
in the direction of main stroke. Also make a complete list of material. (See P. S. Gill pp 675: 17 th edition, 2001).
