MEC554 Thermalfluids Laboratory Evaluation Criterial

1.0 Introduction

The course consists of two parts, experiments relate to thermal engineering and fluid mechanics. All
experiments will be conducted under the supervision of instructors. All experiments will be
conducted in a group environment predetermine by the instructor in a predetermine schedule.
Instructor(s) will be at hand to provide demonstration and guidance on how to correctly operate the
laboratory equipment. All student will be given chances to learn how to correctly perform scientific
data collection. After each experiment, the student will need to write a technical report regarding
the experiment that they have just performed. The report preparation will also be done in a smaller
group environment as determine during the start of the semester.

2.2 Written Report Grading (80%)

The report does not need to be in a certain specific official format, but the report must be well
organized, easy to read and in a professional manner. Below list down the general grading criterial:

• Must be in formal technical report format.

• Well organized with consistence format.
• No plagiarism. If detected the report will be given ZERO score and the proper authority will
be notified.
• No late submission. (Instructor has the right to not grade any report submitted after the
deadline).

For each experiment title performed, at the end of the experiment a corresponding written report
must be prepared for evaluation by each group. All the written reports submitted during the
semester will make up 80% of the total final grade score. The grading of the written report will be
divided into two sections, Section A will address CO2 and make up 60% of the final grade and Section
B will address CO3 and make up 20% of the final grade. Every report submitted for evaluation must
come attached with the official COVER PAGE.

The basic elements that make up an experiment report are:

• Correct cover page from UiTM Penang FKM EM241.

• A clearly written experiment title.
• Clear and well define experiment objective(s).
• Experiment methodology that explain how the experiment was carried out during the
laboratory session. This include the equipment/apparatus used, the setup of the experiment
apparatus, steps on operating the equipment/apparatus, and how you collect the
experiment data.
• Copy of the data that were collected during the laboratory session.
• Analysis of the experiment data. The data collected during the laboratory session need to be
analyzed, compiled and presented in table/graph/figure/diagram. A clear and well written
explanation on how the data were analyzed must also be presented here. The analysis done
can be either in the nature of comparison calculation, performance calculation, physical
calculation or connection to some theoretical explanation.
• Discussion on the output of the laboratory experiment work related to the experiment
objective(s). The discussion should follow the initial experiment objective(s) define during
the start of the experiment and based on the data and the results of the analysis you have
done.
• Write a concise conclusion to the work that have carried out.
• The report must be written in English and in a proper technical report format. No plagiarism
will be tolerated. If there are any references or information/materials taken from other
people sources made in the report, correct citation/referencing must be provided.

The amount of time you will be given to prepare the laboratory report will be under the decision of
the instructor in charge. Remember, each group must prepare and submitted ONE report for every
experiment done. Below are the Laboratory Report grading criterial with their grading rubrics.

2.3 Presentation (10%)

The Presentation session will be conducted during the semester to address the grading relate to
CO4-PO10. When and how the Presentation session will be conducted will be at the decision of the
laboratory instructor(s). The instructor can ask the student to do a short presentation relate to this
course anytime during the semester. Therefore, the student must always be prepared to in a short
notice. The evaluation will be based on the two assessment criteria listed below and score of 1 for
weak performance to 5 for maximum Excellent performance.

Interview session criteria are as follow:

3.0 Calculation of Final Grade

The final grade will be calculate using the formula explain here. Every CO score will be added
individually and then normalized to a score of 1.0 maximum rating. Then the final grade mark will be
calculate using the formula below:

𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹 𝐺𝐺𝐺𝐺𝐺𝐺𝐺𝐺𝐺𝐺 = 𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁 𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶1 × 10% + 𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁 𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶2 × 60% + 𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁 𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶3 × 20%
