CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the study
As an internasional language, English has an important role in internasional or
nasional relationship. In this modern era people demand to have more than one
language . language as a tool of communication is considered importanly in daily
life.communication in foreign language is a bridge to get information,knowledge and
culture. The communication can be in spoken or written
1.2 Problem statement
Unfortunatelly there are many mistakes in sematic case. For example in greeting to
another in certain time. They are influenced by their own language, Indonesia. They
don’t relized that what they greet in english has different meaning than those in
Indonesian
1.3 Objectives of study
It is said how to think or speak someone,reflects the language being used (Effendy
2009:75). The study is going to lead people using the right ways in greeting another
based on the right situation. It means that they should greet correctly according to the
situation.
1.4 Benefit of study
There are many benefits. Firstly they are going to speak according to what enough
semantic rule want. Secondly foreighners are going to understand clearly. Throughly the
people the communicate with will approeciation
CHAPTER II
UNDERLYING THEORY
2.1. Theories
Expert said that communication is a process of interaction that has meaning a many
people(Suprapto,2011:6). It means that communication should created some meaning
from one to another so they easily get a goal of communication itself. Beside grammer,
vocabullary sematic is very mportant
2.2. Previous study
According to (Ruslan,2008:9-10) there are four problems in communication. On of
them is semantic. In this case there is different idea or understanding between
Indonesian and English related to give greeting in transactional spoken. Consequently
there will be mis understanding between speaker or listener

RESEARCH METODOLOGY
3.1. Research Design
Many students of SMPN 1 GIRIMARTO don’t greet their teacher or principal
correctly. They don’t consider a moment hey are greeting to whom they great. One
of a way to design research is by collecting

Teacher : good morning, I am fine but it’s still 11.45 AM
b. Dewi’s greeting to her principal at 11.50 AM
Dewi : good afternoon, Mom! How are you today?
Principle : good morning, Dewi I am very well
c. Joko is greeting to vice principal
Joko : Hello, sir
Vive principal : Hello, Joko
d. Edi meets school officer
Edi : Hi, mom
Officer : Hi, Edi
e. Indah has to go home now in front of the english teacher
Indah : It’s time to go home. Bye byye, sir
Teacher : bye, see you next

The student hould greet good morning from 00.00- 12.00 and good afternoon
from 12:00-24.00. Hello and Hi can be use to informal situation or greeting some
one who have been known before. Hello is ansered by Hi and Hi is replied by Hello.
Good night is use to greet some one to go to bed, but Good evening greeting at the
night. Bye-bye is an informal way. It is better to say good bye than bye-bye to greet
teacher.
CHAPTER IV
FINDING AND DISCUSSION
4.1 Finding Research
The data show that there are many mistake or incorrct greeting. Although
Indonesian has polite utlerence the seventh grade student doesn’t realze that english
also has a same way.
Talking about greeting especially good afternoon otherwise the time shows
still eleven to twelve, it is influenced by the habit of Indonesian people related
greeting in such time
4.2 Therefore the study will have advantage to lead the seventh grade at SMPN 1
GIRIMARTO to greet well. The study also avoid misinterprating in greeting

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION
5.1 Conclusion
The incorrect of greeting of sevent grade SMPN 1 GIRIMARTO shoud be
corrected by giving explanaton to them. It will make communication acceptable and
meaningfull semantically
5.2 Suggestion
It is very clear that fals greeting is not recomended for the succes of
communication. The english teacher should correct directly or explan in front of class
in order to be good greeting situation
