The Philippines in Maritime Asia to the Fourteenth Century

● The Philippines did not exist as much as the 10th century, or even the

precolonial stage before the Spaniards arrived. We share more cultural

traits with our southeast Asian neighbors at the time

Part III. Trade, Tribute and Warfare in a regional context

Our ancient predecessors are focused on their own group and village and the
connection was strong. The family has a strong bond and this connection is shared with the
community

Trade

- There are many evidences that can prove that we have a healthy trade even before the Spain
took over. The excavation of Chinese porcelain from the 12th century can prove that we are very
much develop in our own terms.

As a coastal settlement we are a good place to do business with. Those who controlled the
trade grew in material wealth and status. Obviously the datus are the one financing these trade

The settlements grew and the datus project their power by going to warfare. The powerful Chief
dominated the weaker states. That is how they acquire power and wealth including slaves.
Common reason for going to war is avenging and abduction. Alliances were formed through
marriage and friendship means more warrior to attack mutual enemies.

Tribute

Tribute is the only legal and safe way to do trade with China. Our connection with China started
during the Tang dynasty(618-907) where trade was legitimate only as an aspect of the formal
relation between rulers. A tribute is a symbolic acceptance to have an opportunity to do trade in
a larger port. This has strengthen political ties as well
Bonus : great development in trade caused expansion and malays from Brunei and northern
Borneo first settled in Tundu( present day Metro Manila), wherein we have adapted their
customs and language.

Early Legal Document

In 1986 an inscribed copper plate measuring about 8x12 inches was found in laguna. It was
carbon dated at 900 c.e. making it the oldest document found in the archipelago to date. This
copperplate affirms the existence of a structured political system.Wherein a chief clears a debt
after a man of status died , hence freeing his family and bloodline of all debts as well.

The Philippines in early times has less-populated and less centralized polities than other parts
of Southeast Asia but was of same political realm. The barangays are connected through
networks but still maintain a high sense of locality. We can see state formation an kinship ,
practices , religious beliefs and system of socioeconomic status and dependency . Trade
resulted in growing population , political innovation and concentration of political power . these
developments will greatly accelerate in the 14th century
