ABSTRACT
This paper aims to explore the relationship between architecture and fashion from
conceptual imagery, materials and global perspective. From the imagery -visual view of
point, both arts are responsive to the individuals and the societies’ culture and
environment (Miller, 2012). Generally, architecture and fashion are common in sources
of art, science and technology. Nevertheless, it is good to see that the best situation when
one field becomes a source of another, and they support each other through visibly
relationship. Architecture gives inspiration to fashion, thus fashion achieves notability for

in terms of making a model house and creating sample trendy clothes. In spite of a
difference in function, the aesthetic is similar. Also, they are highly expressive, using
specific shapes, pattern, colors and textures to evoke emotion from people (Assoulin,
2016). The reason for this research paper is to know how modern architecture inspires
the fields of fashion and architecture. An interview of the fashion designers and architects
will take place in order to arrive at a conclusion. There will be eighteen (20) participants
that include five (5) architecture students, four (5) professional architects, two (5) fashion
THESIS STATEMENT
Fashion and architecture address psychological perceptions and spatial structures and
both fields went through several generations were design transits from the complexity to
the modernity and minimalist design. Architecture gives inspiration to fashion, thus
fashion achieves notability for an architectural figure or element and also, they are highly
expressive, using specific shapes, pattern, colors and textures to evoke emotion of people.
They are both visually focused expressions of individual’s taste and the generation we
live in and this will also look forward to seeing more architecture influence in fashion
1. INTRODUCTION
In this generation, the relationship between architecture and fashion design is not
something out of the brain and imaginary. Over the past times, the bond between
architecture and fashion has gotten robust by the understanding of the fact that these
fields share in common, similar ideas and principles based on structure, form, art,
science, technology and aesthetics (Miles 2008). The close relationship between
Architecture and Fashion is often referred to the use of the same material for covering of
body and for building shelter of the earliest man. The current exhibition on this
connection (Skin + Bones (24 April – 10 August 2008) has also explored several parallel
practices between these two fields from 1980s to onwards. These practices included
digital design process, colors, lines, lights, use of complex geometry, etc. Globalization,
and communication means, enabled both architecture and fashion to develop more
potentials in design and flexibility in application. Fashion designers and architects can be
seen as artists who create pieces of art. Art, science and technology are connected with
one another. Consequently, they affect each other with a debatable boundary amongst
themselves. (Wilson 2002). Thus one of the aims of this term paper is to explore the

Many exhibitions and art fairs took place on the parallel relationship

The aim of researcher for this study is to have a thorough understanding about the
relationship between modern architectural design and contemporary fashion design. The
researcher catches interest about this topic encouraged and inspired by the structural

Technology in some ways made people‘s life easier, but in many cases
technology caused problems which people could not adapt to. Technology had its
effects in the field of fashion and architecture too. The designers made to be more

merges aesthetics and style with functional technology. These influences can be visible in
the materials used in architecture like the use of metals as a building material. Metals
have been in existence in architecture over the past centuries and are still been in use till
date.
A lot of fashion designers in the past centuries tried to use metal as a fashion
fabric but were unsuccessful until when Paco Rabanne a fashion designer used metal
sheets and created a dress. His design was influenced and based on metal covering used
in buildings by architects. He used metal for the dress to act as a covering on the human
body as a concept. Frank Gehry is one of the architects still exploring with metal
covering in buildings.

Design is one of the other factors that both architecture and fashion have
in common. Design, as the key element in both fashion and architecture brings
them closer and creates relationship between them. It is necessary for the
designer to have a well-defined, clear and refined vision. The Coliseum in Rome,
the pyramids in Egypt, the Eiffel Tower in Paris or the finely chiseled Ajanta

The eye’s dominance over the other senses has created a culture dominated by the

In some instances, these two share the same stylistic terms. The below “terms” of
which depend entirely on the background of where it originated. In this case, De Stijl,
was stated by Mark Wigley in his book White Walls and Designer Dresses,
1995, over the time architects have relied on dress for similarity even though
they frequently lay off fashion as playful and absurd. Though modern
architecture cannot be detached from clothing because from the beginning it has
always been an art of a dress (protective body) (Wigley 1995: 10).Basically the
lamented clothing of the nineteenth century and to put on a pure white as a full
covering (Pawley 2000: 94). The dressing of pure white walls is a fashion which
is far from being unbiased and quiet as is proposed but signifying a selective
considering it like a clothing design (Wigley 1995: 86). Another one who is
matched like a custom-made suit, he stated that architects should initially take
constructed form (Quinn 2003: 50), affirming that this was the applied path that
people initially learned to build. Toyo Ito is another architect who experimented
covering the structure with a geometrical facade and this facade holds the
structure just the way fitted clothing tightly to the body. However, just like
several other architects, Ito has designed and built stores for several fashion
organizations. (Hodge Skin+Bones: 16) During the late nineteenth century, the
architecture of fashion stores quickly turned out to be a vital focus, hence the
clothing in their proposals. This process has allowed architecture to have a long-
fashion industry. People who have familiarized themselves with the fashion
world tend to be conscious of the fashion imagery, thus architects have been

5. CONCLUSION
The relationship between architectural and fashion design has been proven that
these two fields have many areas in common. Both disciplines are design based, and
share the same boundaries, as they both create fluidity and aesthetic forms to shelter the
human body [Ukessays, April 30, 2018]. Architecture and fashion both share concept of
design as art, technology and science in an aesthetic, form, materials, and structure. The
conceptions have been presented in examples for both fashion and architecture. They are
both benefiting of the existence of relationship between art, science and technology; these
three are affecting architecture and fashion in a way that somehow a way to connect
between them to benefit from each other techniques, materials and concepts. The parallel
However, there are differences between fashion design and architecture, such as
the length of time fashion lasts, which is shorter than architectural structures that are
timeless. Architecture also depends on structural, monumental and eternal while on the
other hand, Fashion is highly on marketing and consumption. Also in materials, it is rare
that these two have the same materials but it is in the way on how they execute things in
order to achieve their design. But these two have the similarities in the materials in terms
of durability because these two fields used specific materials to create a work that will
last long. The fascinating is that the top fashion designers in the world are architects, such
as Pierre Cardian and Tom Ford. These architects have created fashion using the similar
of material to make the whole garment, these architects/ fashion designers have created

People face many invention and innovation designs which help human borings in

the basic component of design objects ‘are the same and represents the same function, but
what makes them so unique and personal is by the aesthetic, functional and
communicative criteria. The process of design in both fashion and architectural is the
structural system that can be used as the main idea of the design and work as the
aesthetics. After the researches, interviews and observations that have been done, it is
clear that the designers in architecture and fashion industries are working in a way to be
more creative, inventive and innovative. The similarities and differences in contemporary
fashion and modern architectural designs are much more visible in the end product and
object and these similarities and interrelationships can be clearly seen in the given
