Competencies Statement

The first step to becoming a leader is to realize what are your strengths and weaknesses and

be willing to work on them. It is important to know where your 15% lies and invest in it

majorly so that it indirectly influences your 85%. Having discussed with my team members

and as per my annual review from my previous organization, some of my strengths are – the

ability to stay calm and act as a moderator in project teams, good analytical and

presentational skills, willingness to learn and quick adaptability to the dynamic nature of a

project. Some of my areas of improvement pointed out are – short attention span and to work

on being more assertive.

Coming from an engineering background, I have always been taught to think about solutions

but the “5 Why’s” technique really stuck with me. The entire concept of taking a step back

when faced with a problem resonated with me. It throws light on the importance of first

understanding the root problem and then figuring its solution because many a time the

solution we think of doesn’t address the root issue. Since then, I have been working on

making a conscious effort of adopting this technique. There are so many instances that I can

think of from my past where had I applied this technique, it would have saved me so much of

effort and time.

In order to hone my skills of heading a team and sharpening my leadership capabilities, I plan

to make the most of my position as the Director of Communication for the Net Impact,

Hyderabad Cohort. This will help me in improving my networking skills. I will be able to

learn a lot about sustainability from the companies we plan on approaching for investment

and even from my batchmates who would want to be a part of the club. Being in the

executive team of this club, I will get a chance to work on creating a roadmap for the club

while keeping everyone’s interests and objectives into consideration.

Apart from this, I also plan on applying to the “International Exchange Program”. I love to

explore new cultures, learn how business models change with geography and this is the

perfect opportunity for the same. It will also give me a global business perspective and help

in better understanding of the international market forces.

Lastly, since I have been working in the consulting industry for the last 5 years, I plan on

joining the “Schulich Consulting Club” when I arrive in Toronto. Given my experience and

interest in the field, I feel there is so much I can give and parallelly learn from others. I want

to expand my analytical skills and learn from the best. I reckon that joining this club will help

me expand my ability to adapt to changing business/client needs, conditions, and work

responsibilities. Working with other people from the same field will also help me strengthen

my interpersonal skills and help challenge my problem-solving ability.
