Glued vs Clip on gaskets - Background

 Heat exchangers in food and dairy

industry are required to be sterilized
between each batch to ensure no residual
bacteria inside the unit.

 It was difficult to clean the space

between the gasket and the plate and thus
sterilize the unit. The glue-less, or clip on
gasket was designed to solve this problem.

 After each batch, the unit is opened and

the clip on gasket is removed to make sure
that the entire plate is cleaned and
sterilized. The gaskets are not reused.

Glued vs Clip on gaskets - Background

 Some companies used that as a

marketing tool in the HVAC, Industrial and
Marine applications and succeeding in
having the designers specify clip on
gaskets for non food and dairy industries.

 Rather than being a benefit we believe

that this actually presents a problem to the
customer in these industries.

Clip on gaskets – Serviceability

 When the unit is opened for cleaning, the clip on

gasket will stick to the adjoining plate and stretch out of
shape. This will make it very difficult to reseat and seal.

 The tabs will fall off due to age or handling.

 Even if the gasket can reseat itself, the fluid can get
behind the gasket and act as a corrosion cell which can
corrode the plate material.

 Oily process fluids will make resealing more difficult

since the gasket will be sliding in the gasket groove
during tightening.

 Each tab is important for the gasket’s sealing and the

shear amount of tabs to keep track and care of can be
an sizeable task.

Clip on gaskets – Serviceability

 If a glued gasket is used, the unit can be opened

and washed down with high pressure water and
the gasket will not be damaged nor need
changing.

The glued gasket will not stretch out of shape

when opening the unit.

 No tabs to pay extra attention to.

 No risk for corrosion cells.
 Fixed gaskets means no gasket sliding in the
gasket groove during tightening.

 No need to change gasket for every cleaning.

Glued vs Clip on gaskets – Summary

 For food and dairy application or where the sanitization of

the equipment is a necessary part of the operation, a clip on
gasket should be used.

 For other applications we strongly recommend that a

glued gasket should be used.
