The Development of Web-based Smartbook for Teaching Islamic Religion and Character

Subject Primary School Level Using QR Code

Abstract

The use of technology in life is no longer considered something new in our society, especially in
the life of the young generation. Web-based technology is becoming a trend in our society. It is
not only helpful for shopping, transportation, bank transaction, and health access, but also for
education. Therefore, technology plays an important role for improving the education for the
young generation.

Using Web-based Smartbook to teach Islamic Religion and Character with QR code for the
Primary school students is considered a new design. Therefore, this study is aiming to describe the
development of Web-based Smartbook using QR code to teach Islamic Religion and Character
Subject. The method used in this study follows the model developed by Addie, which are: 1)
analysis, 2) design, 3) development, 4) implementation, 5) evaluation. On the other hand, the
development procedure is based on Borg and Gall (1998), which are: 1) preliminary study, 2)
information gathering, 3) product design, 4) design validation, 5) design revision, 6) small-scale
trials, 7) product revision, 8) trials, 9) product revision, 10) mass production.

Web-based product trial for Islamic Religion and Character subject for primary level using QR
code is consisted of: 1) product small and big scale trial design. The subject of the trial is the
primary school students grade 5. The data used was quantitative and qualitative and the instrument
chosen was the validation from a web-design and content expert and the instrument used for the
big and small scale product trial. The analysis technique used was the qualitative method.

The result of this study was that this smartbook product has features in barcode through QR code.
The features consist of these things: the first barcode is “Read or Listen to Me.” This barcode
contains the lesson. If the lesson is substantive, then it is provided in a book form. However, if it
is the verses of Al-Qur’an, it is provided in the form of audio. The second barcode is “Send It to
Me.” Students send their reading result which is in the form of summary or Teacher’s Whatsapp
audio recording. The third barcode is “Guess who am I.” this barcode is picture guessing. Students
are asked to guess pictures that are related to the substantive lesson or to the Al-Qur’an verses.
The fourth barcode is “Answer Me.” This barcode is a multiple choice question for the substantive
lesson. The fifth barcode is “What Should I Do?” this barcode consists of stories that are followed
by questions. This is to measure students’ affective and psychometric skill. The sixth barcode is
“Understand Me.” Students relate it to the stories uploaded in Youtube, Each feature is given a
code that will appear from the barcode. All of these are android-based. The seventh barcode is
“Find Me.” It is about looking for words related to the substantive lesson or to the verses. The
eighth barcode is “Put Me in Order.” This barcode is about ordering words or letters into sentences
on the substantive lesson or the Qur’anic verses.
This development design has been analyzed through product trial. This web-based product is
promising. It is a new product for teaching of Islamic Religion and Character subject and it can
also minimize the negative used of android that usually occur out of the teachers’ or parents’
control. This product could also motivate students to learn because studying is not only through
printed material, but also through web.
The product revision has been done through expert validation. The suggestion was on the questions
that should be related with basic competence stated in the Islamic Religion and Character subject.
This should be supported by a rubric. On the other hand, the result of the product validation
suggested that there should be a revision although not in big scale. Another suggestion from the
media expert was that animation should be added in order to motivate the students more.
