As part of the University of the Philippines Cebu’s centennial celebration, a tree planting activity was held
in UP SRP last April 4, 2018.

Four species of seedlings: Kalingag, Molave, Supa and Katmon, were planted in the grounds of the UP
Professional Schools in South Road Properties. This was sponsored by the Binhi: Let the Future take root,
which is a collaborative project of the Energy Development Corporation (EDC).

The program and the tree planting event started at 9 am and ended at 11 am.

All students, faculty, staff, admins and alumni of UP Cebu were invited in the event. Among the
participants of the tree planting activity were personnel from the Office of the Chancellor, Office of the
Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administration, Office of the
University Registrar, UP Cebu Chapter (Alumni), different colleges: The College of Sciences, the School of
Management, the College of Social Sciences and the College of Communications, Arts and Design, and the
UP Faculty Retirees.

The activity is a symbolism. As the UP tagline goes, “Nurtured to create, inspired to innovate, destined to
serve”, UP Cebu is like a seedling. The seedling needs to be nurtured to grow. Gradually, as these seedlings
grows into trees, it innovates, it brings change that can benefit everyone. Like UP, which is destined to
serve, the trees will also serve its purpose: as a shade to people.

Mr. Cito Mendez, a staff at UP Cebu, stated that, “Ig ka dako atong mga tanom, muhatag na ug landong
para sa umaabot na mga estudyante. Kini sd kay makamenos sa greenhouse gases.”

(These seedlings will soon grow into fine trees that may serve as a shade to the future students of the
school. Also, this tree planting activity may help reduce the greenhouse gases.)

“Ang kining tree planting, gibuhat ni para mu nindot ang UP sa SRP. Mudaghan ang mga langgam nya
mubugnaw-bugnaw sad ang palibot”, he added.

(This tree planting activity will add to the beauty of the campus. It will attract birds and it can make the
environment cooler.)

A lot of people attended the event and it was deemed successful. This event only lasted for a couple of
hours, but the results of this event will last for several years.
