1.0 OBJECTIVES

The objectives of this laboratory are;

1. Explain the characteristics of laser cutting in term of process, equipment, setup and their
applications.
2. Practice the laser cutting processes using to make variety of shapes and patterns.
3. Apply the soft skills such as communication skills, critical thinking and spirit of teamwork.

2.0 INTRODUCTION

Bending is a process by which metal can be deformed by plastically deforming the material
and changing its shape. The material is stressed beyond the yield strength but below the ultimate
tensile strength. The surface area of the material does not change much. Bending usually refers
to deformation about one axis. Bending is a flexible process by which many different shapes
can be produced. Standard die sets are used to produce a wide variety of shapes. The material
is placed on the die, and positioned in place with stops and/or gages. It is held in place with
hold-downs. The upper part of the press, the ram with the appropriately shaped punch descends
and forms the v-shaped bend. Bending is done using Press Brakes. Press Brakes normally have
a capacity of 20 to 200 tons to accommodate stock from 1m to 4.5m (3 feet to 15 feet). Larger
and smaller presses are used for specialized applications. Programmable back gages, and
multiple die sets available currently can make for a very economical process.
Bending of sheet metal is a common and vital process in manufacturing industry. Sheet
metal bending is the plastic deformation of the work over an axis, creating a change in the
part's geometry. Similar to other metal forming processes, bending changes the shape of the
work piece, while the volume of material will remain the same. In some cases, bending may
produce a small change in sheet thickness. For most operations, however, bending will produce
essentially no change in the thickness of the sheet metal. In addition to creating a desired
geometric form, bending is also used to impart strength and stiffness to sheet metal, to change
a part's moment of inertia, for cosmetic appearance and to eliminate sharp edges.

3.0 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE

In this lab session, you are divided into groups of 4 or 5 people. Bend the mild plate sheet into
specific dimensions as shown in Appendix A. Use the bending machine to form the plate into the
requirement shape.
