ELP/EMP-7200

EPSON
INTRODUCTION
This Service Manual describes of the hardware information which is necessary for the
smooth repair and technical support of the XGA DATA PROJECTOR ELP/EMP-7200
and the trouble shooting.
The primary technologies will be supplied with Technical Information hereafter.

HOW TO USE THE SERVICE MANUAL


You may utilize this Service Manual for repair or diagnosis of failures at your service
section. The contents are as following. Before you start the maintenance service, read
every safety precautions and observe safety precautions and observe safety rules.
Precautions: SAFETY, MAINTENANCE, PERSON and others.
Chapter 1: Product specifications (Product General, variance with ELP/EMP-7300,
list of spec. and others)
Appendix: Control software manual, the Part list, the exploded diagrams and others

VCCI RADIO REQUENCY INTERFERENCE SELF RESTRICTION

PRECAUTIONS

1. MAINTAIN THE SAFETY OF OPERATORS


(1) PROTECTION FROM ELECTRIC SHOCK
* Whenever doing any repair work on the product, be sure to turn off the power switch
and remove the electric power cable from the electrical outlet.
* Whenever inevitably turning the power on to the product opening the case or cover
(repair process) be sure to take off any metallic materials such as watch, cuffs, rings,
and tie pins which may touch the metallic part of the product and dangerous of
electric shock.

(2) PROTECTION FROM ACCIDENTAL INJURY


* Be sure not to touch the lamp inner housing and its circumstances after the power is
turned off, they may be heated up even after the cooling down process was ended.
Also make sure not to touch the light source and its circumstances during the
operation of repair as turning the power on.
* Make sure to protect your hands by gloves from sharp edges during assembly and
disassembly.
* Do not look into the light source or lens while the light is on. Protect eyes from being
damaged.

(3) PROTECTION FROM ACCIDENTS


* Any operation should be done while the device placed on a flat and stable place to
prevent the device or parts from being dropped. Be careful not to place tools and
parts on the device or at your feet.
* Whenever doing any repair work on the product, be sure to away from a place for
foreigner come across in order to prevent the product from being used in
incomplete condition or accidental near miss. Be sure not to leave the product
during any repair work.
* Be sure to use the attached power cable when you supply the power to the product.

2. SAFETY MAINTENANCE
(1) ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE
* Whenever doing any repair work on the product, be sure to wear the wristband and
the electrostatic mat with grounding. When replacing any electric components
(Board and Optical engine), it is recommended to touch the electrostatic plastic bag
of the component to the metallic part of the product once before take the
component out from the plastic bag.

(2) LIMITATION OF PARTS


* Use only authorized or supplied parts from EPSON for the replacement of
mechanical parts including the lamp inner housing, air filter and so on.
* Use only the power cable and the interface cables attached with the product.

(3) Others
* Visually checks the distortion or dirt at the connectors of the power cable. If dirty,
clean off, and if distorted, replace the cable in order to avoid firing by the flush over
phenomenon.
* When plug the internal connector cables or the interface cables, be sure to fully plug
into the connectors unit until it stack to the connector edge.
* Whenever doing removal of parts or repair work on the product, make sure that the
work is done in a clean room, free of dust and dirt in order to keep the optical
element away from dirt.

3. REQUIREMENT FOR THE SERVICE PERSON


Authorized person should have the following knowledge and skill for the maintenance
of ELP/EMP-7200.
* Need to sufficiently understand the operation and the descriptions of this service
manual.
* Need to have the basic knowledge of electricity (safety operation, circuit diagram,
electrostatic, and else...)
* Need to be trained by EPSON authorized maintenance training program and to have
a certain technique as a service engineer.

or contents of the document would like to be contacted to the below address. Any
technical information about amendments is occasionally available as Technical

Product Specifications
1.1 PRODUCT GENERAL

ELP/EMP-7200 XGA DATA PROJECTOR is such model that ELP/EMP-7300 was


changed in respect of Light Valve. In case of this model Micro Lens Allay (MLA) is
not attached on the Light Valve, while ELP/EMP-7300 involves it.
Circuit, mechanism, optical system and others are common with ELP/EMP-7300.
So please handle the relative repair service with referring to Service Manual for
ELP/EMP-7300.

1.2 VARIANCE WITH ELP/EMP-7300


1.2.1 Component
Of all the components of ELP/EMP-7200, every part except the following parts
and units are common with ELP/EMP-7300.

The Light Valves are incorporated in the optical engine. The Optical engine is to
be supplied as one unit.
Expensive adjustment equipment is required to repair the internal optical engine
so that such items are to be repaired at the exclusive factory in Japan.

1.2.2 ELP Software
When ELP/EMP-7200 is launched, the software attached with ELP/EMP-7200
and 7300 on purchasing is to be made up-grad at the same time. Any points are
not changed from viewpoints of function.

1.2.3 ESC/VP
ESC/VP (Epson Standard Code for Visual Products) is prepared as a command
system for controlling projector via computer.
Each level command is basically upper compatible. However the commands
which correspond to the projector hardware function are exclusive commands
for each model.

REMOTE CONTROL

[Additional explanation]
On air method is shown with Color method-NTSC/PAL/SECAM and broadcasting
standard-N/M/B/G.

*1 SECAM has "L" and "B/G/H" methods. These ones vary each other in respect
of polarity of horizontal sync. signal and voice modulation method.
*2 NTSC4.43 and PAL60 are what are output when NTSC software is reproduced
on VCR of PAL spec. Then the NTSC data is to be output in PAL spec.
NTSC4.43 has transmission method of NTSC and the carrier frequency is
4.43MHz as well as PAL.
PAL60 has transmission method of PAL and the vertical frequency is 60Hz as
well as NTSC.
Either ones have source of M-NTSC so that they have 525 pcs of scanning
line for each.

This software has been made in order to set up and version up software of the Multi
media projector, EMP/ELP-7300/5300/7200 through PC.
The firmware mentioned here means a generic name of the program installed in the
flash ROM of projector and it is such software as made for the purpose of controlling
EMP/ELP-7300/5300/7200.

1. The theory of installing the software
(1) Make PC (with Windows95 installed) ready.
(2) Make a new holder (e.g. Com_IO) on the hard disk.
(3) Copy the following files in the holder.

2. The theory of using Com IO


(1) Preparatory items
*Projector
*PC with "Com IO" software installed
*Main cable
*PC serial cable
(2) Connect the main cable and PC serial cable to the projector.
(3) Connect the PC serial cable to serial port com1 of PC.
(4) Power on the projector.
(5) Execute "comio.exe" file. (Click twice times on the explore. Or make a short cut and then click the
icon twice times.)

(6) Open necessary command in the "Transmit List" and execute the item by transmitting.
(7) The commands included in the Transmit List are always to be executed. In case of
executing any new commands, please surely execute it after eliminating the former command
with pressing "Delete(D)" button.

indicate hour. (*counted by hexadecimal)
ex) 25 (16) = 37 hour
(4) The 4 figures, which are from 7th figure to 10th figure with counting from the right end, do
indicate second. (*counted by hexadecimal)
ex) 120 (16) = 288 seconds = 4 minutes 48 seconds

1 Outline of software
This software has been made in order to set up and version up software of the Multi media projector,
EMP-7300/5300/7200 through PC.
The firmware mentioned here means a generic name of the program installed in the flash ROM of
projector and it is such software as made for the purpose of controlling EMP-7300/5300/7200.

2 Matters demanding special attention


If firmware is wrongly set up, projector can turn to impossible to use. Except instructed in this
manual, never attempt to use this software in other ways.
If error occurs while data is transmitted from firmware, the main board of projector can turn to
impossible to use. Please take care the power supply cable and main cable for transmission not to
be unplugged on the way.

3 How to install software


3.1 Prepare PC (the DOS/ V PC on which Windows95 is installed)
3.2 Make a new folder (e.g. “DownLoad”) on the hard disk.
3.3 Copy files in a folder.

4 How to set up downloader


4.1 What is required
 Projector
 PC on which downloader is installed
 Main cable
 PC serial cable
 AC power cable
4.2 Connect projector with main cable and PC serial cable.
4.3 Connect one end of PC serial cable to com1 of the PC serial port.
4.4 Connect AC power cable while pressing the power button and enter button on the projector itself at the
same time. Then the projector turns to download mode.
4.5 Carry out downloader.exe. (Do double click under explorer. Otherwise make short cut key beforehand
and double click the icon.)

5 How to down load firmware


5.1 Press Open button and select necessary file.
In case of version up of firmware for EMP-7300, select Rscd10.hex.

5.2 Select Download Area.


In case of version up of firmware, select PROGRAM.

Close Button

5.3 Press Down Load button and carry out download. Then progress status of communication is
displayed at the bottom of screen.
5.4 If message of communication end is displayed, press Close button and finish the software.

6 When you fail downloading


In the instance, please try again from procedure 4.4 to 5.4
