TODAY’S VOCABULARY WORDS
Line: The path of a moving point.

Shape: the area enclosed by an outline

Rhythm: The repeated use of similar elements such as color, line, or shape. Also, the smooth transition from one part
to another in a work of art.
• Random rhythm – Repeating elements with no specific regular interval creates random rhythms.
• Alternating rhythm – You can repeat more than one element in a design. In an alternating design, you use a 1-2-
1-2-1-2 pattern.
• Regular rhythm – Like the beating of a heart, the regular rhythm follows the same intervals over and over again.
• Flowing rhythm – A flowing rhythm shows the repeated elements following bends, curves, and undulations. In
nature, you can see this in the waves on a beach or sand dunes.
• Progressive rhythm – We can make a progressive rhythm simply by changing one characteristic of a motif as we
repeat it. We could draw a series of circles, one above the other, making each lower one larger.

1. Fold your practice paper in half to separate it for your two practice
drawings.
2. Listen to the music and draw the lines and shape you feel represent
the music. Remember, these are loose sketch's not finished works.
3. Notice the marks that you liked and didn’t like in your sketch.

1. Listen to the music for a few moments and get a feeling for it
a) Think about the colors you want to use
b) Think about the lines you want to use
c) Think about the shapes you want to use
2. Start your drawing with pencil or go straight to the markers.
3. Keep adding more to your drawing as you listen to the sounds in the
music. The marks you make will represent the song.
