The most common and useful words in English are marked according to the
(adj) = adjective Macmillan Dictionary ‘star rating’. This is so you can easily recognise the
(adv) = adverb vocabulary you need to know especially well.
(conj) = conjunction = very common words = common words = fairly common words
(det) = determiner
(n/n pl) = noun/noun plural If there is no star next to the word, this means that it is not very common.
(phr) = phrase In the Macmillan Dictionary, (r) is used to indicate where the sound /r/
(prep) = preposition is pronounced in American English and some other regional varieties of
