Objectives of the Course:

To provide the students with a comprehensive understanding of the main concepts and
issues that affect modern management and how the aforementioned concepts and issues
can contribute towards the attainment of the organization’s short and long term goals and
objectives.

Learning Outcomes:

After completion of the course students should be able to:

1. Develop an understanding into the processes of modern management.


2. Analyze the factors that affect modern managers as persons.
3. Discuss the issues that affect modern management in the global environment.
4. Develop an understanding of the factors and processes that affect the efficiency and
effectiveness of an organization.
5. Analyze and discuss the reasons behind organizational change, resistance to change
and how change it can best be implemented.
6. Develop and understanding of the characteristics that modern managers and
leaders have and how these can contribute towards effective team management.
7. Understand the importance of the human resource factor in an organization and
how effective communication can increase the efficiency and effective of the
organization and help it attain its goals and objectives.

Course Contents:

1. Introduction and Classical Theories of Management: an introduction to the


classical theories of management and the factors that affect individual and group
behavior.
2. Management and Leadership: themes, concepts and issues, the management
process today and the manager as a person. Analysis of the factors that motivate
employees and the characteristics that effective leaders demonstrate.
3. Management as Strategy and Control: a study of the functions of management
as strategy and control and its various challenges.
4. Contemporary Approaches to Management: a study of the contemporary
approaches to management and the factors that affect the management of vital
operations and processes. The elements of organizational structure, reasons why
people resist change and how to implement it.
5. Creativity, Competitive Advantage and IT Management: what is creativity
and how organizations can attain a competitive advantage, the importance of
IT management.
6. Human Resources and Operations Management: understand and analyze the
importance of the human resource factor, how vital operations and processes affect
the organizational performance.
7. Ethics, Diversity and the Global Environment: the issues and concerns
that impact the success of the organization in the global environment.

Assignment 1 - This assignment is worth 50% of the module marks and is due at the end of
Week 5; Sunday 11.59 pm (23:59 hours) UTC time on the due date at the latest.

Assignment 2 - This assignment is worth 50% of the module marks and is due at the end of
Week 7; Sunday 11.59 pm (23:59 hours) UTC time on the due date at the latest.

Course Requirements:

Assessment Criteria: You will be evaluated based on the average grade of your two
summative assignments. In order to pass this course you need to achieve an overall
minimum grade of 70%. The tasks and discussion forum included in this course are
formative, this means that they aren’t graded but you are encouraged to participate in
each one as they are designed to help you and provide you with a good understanding of
the main concepts that are included in each of your assignments.
