Question and Answer:

1. Based on your opinion, what is the most popular literary work in sixteenth
century? Why do you choose that work?

In my opinion, the most popular literary work in sixteenth century was a play by
William Shakespeare entitled Romeo and Juliet. I choose this work as a popular
literary work because as we know that the popularity of Romeo and Juliet tragic
romance story is still happening around the world until now. This play has made a
huge influence or impact, for example there are various movies released with the
same main story and title and also there are lots of novels that also have the same title
and same plot story.

2. Give a synopsis and critic about the plot in that most popular literary work you
have chosen!

Romeo and Juliet is a story about man and woman from different background of royal
family who fall in love. But, their love story did not end well. Romeo from the
Montagues family supposed to be sworn enemies of Capulets, Juliet’s family. But they
fall in love together. Romeo cannot freely see his love Juliet every day, because their
due family conflicts. Juliet and Romeo then decided to get married secretly. Later
then, after conflicts between Juliet’s family and kill her cousins, named Tybald and
Romeo then get banished. Juliet’s father then tell his daughter that she has to married
a man named Paris, but Juliet still fall in love with Romeo and then decide to made a
plan for her to run away from her family and live with Romeo together, but this plan
did not goes well. Juliet then fakes her death and lies, waiting for Romeo to get her.
But, Romeo did not know about this plan and comes to take Juliet run away but later
then he found Juliet and think that she actually die. Romeo then takes a poison and
drinks it so he can be with Juliet in death. Juliet the wake up from her fake death and
find out that Romeo is death. She then decides to take Romeo’s dagger and kill
herself. Because of this tragedy, the ongoing feud between Montagues and Capulets
family ends.

I think that, the plot of this Romeo and Juliet story represent teenage true love
between the royal families but they did not receive an agreement both of man’s family
and woman’s family. This kind of plot is very popular and still use until now but with
a little modification.
3. Based on your opinion, what is the characteristic of literary works in sixteenth
century?

In my opinion about literature works characteristics in sixteenth century, we have to

know that sixteenth century is years from 1501 to 1600. And between this year, is also
known as a Rebirth era of mostly known as Renaissance. In this era, most of literature
works is portrays man as a centre of a society and also humanist philosophy such as
belief in self and individual dignity.

4. Based on your opinion, is there any correlation between the most popular issue in
sixteenth century and literary works at the time?Explain!

In my opinion, yes, there is correlation between issues in sixteenth century and

literary works at that time. For example, the most popular issue in 16 th century is the
death of Leonardo da Vinci in 1519, and on the same year, the books entitled
Leonardo’s notebooks about Leonardo Da Vinci itself released. The other case, is the
most popular issue in 16th century is the influenced or popularity of Henri VIII, this
issue then made William Shakespeare to released the story of Previous king Henry’s
story such as King Henry IV, Part 1 in 1597, King Henry VI in 1591, and Henry IV
war of the Roses in 1597. So, the conclusion is most of the literature works in 16 th
century is released based on the popular issue that have on that century.

5. Give your analysis about moral value in that literary work you have chosen!

Based on my view, the moral value of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is
we have to create a better social environment for the others like in this story bad
social environments create bad result between Romeo and Juliet itself because their
family feud. The second moral value I can get is we have to think before doing
something. We don’t have to make a rash decision that just can made a bad result, like
in this story is the death of Romeo that take a poison and drank it, is kinds of bad and
rush decision. And also do not let a young love makes you kill yourself.
