Dear Mehdi:

It is long time since our collaboration in the frame of RABMEDCONTROL.

The reason to contact you is to request your participation in a new EU project proposal on
rabies, in the frame of an open call of PRIMA (Partnership for the Research and Innovation in
the Mediterranean area) annual work plan 2018. http://prima-med.org/call-for-proposal/call-
section-2-multi-topic-2018/. The proposal would be included in the topic1.2.2 “preventing and
controlling emergence of animal and plant diseases”.

The tentative title of the proposal would be "Strategies for the control of rabies in North
African Mediterranean countries and the prevention of importation into Europe”.

The project would be coordinated by Juan Badiola, from the Center for the Research on
Encephalopathies (university of Zaragoza) and me.

Together with Spain, we are trying to request partners from Morocco, Tunisia and Italy and
that is the reason to request your participation.

The general objectives would be:

1. The study of the present situation of rabies in Tunisia and Morocco:

Epidemiology, molecular epidemiology and control.
2. Risk assessment of the importation of rabies into Italy and Spain through
transboundary pet movements:
Collection of data about pet movements from North Africa across the borders and risk
assessment of rabies importation.
3. The estimation of the preparedness of Italy and Spain to prevent outbreaks of rabies
from imported cases:
Epidemiological surveillance, contingency plans, pet vaccination.
4. The study of bat rabies in southern and northern Mediterranean countries:
Epidemiology, molecular epidemiology, surveillance systems, prophylaxis of bat-transmitted
rabies.

They would be developed in each country according to the particular situation. In the case of
Morocco, there is a recent detailed study on the rabies situation in the the country. For this
reason, our initial plan is to focus only in an update of the molecular epidemiology.

We hope it will be of your interest. Please, let us know your willingness to participate in this
proposal.

Best regards.

Juan

epidemiological surveillance, control and transboundary pet movements, as well as to support
Tunisia and Morocco on molecular epidemiology studies.

We hope it will be of your interest. Please, let us know about your willingness to participate in
this proposal.
