Purpose
 To determine the total traffic entering Espana
boulevard.
 To interpret non-peak hour volume.
 To recommend possible solutions for
problems/difficulties regarding the traffic in the
area.

Description of the Survey Area

Actual Location of the area with flow of number of

vehicles recorded (West Side)

Actual Location of the area with flow of number of
vehicles recorded (East Side)

We conducted the traffic count survey at two

different side of roads. Both lanes have four lanes. The
first road is located on Espana Boulevard on the west side
part of Espana Manila at University of Santo Tomas where
vehicles are bound going to Quiapo, Manila. The other side
of the road is located on the east side of Espana
Boulevard across the University of Santo Tomas where
vehicles are bound to Quezon City. We conducted the study
at exactly 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, dated last September 13,
2018(Friday) and the weather is cloudly.
Our group are tasked to count the number of vehicles
passing the both roads with an interval of 15 minutes. The
types of vehicles that have been counted are the following:
jeepneys, puvs, uv – express, medium size truck,
ambulance, taxis, bicycles, motorcycles, and tricycles.
In the first road where we conducted the survey on the
west side part of Espana Manila at University of Santo
Tomas where vehicles are bound going to Quiapo, Manila,
there are also vehicles going to University of Santo Tomas,
we also include those vehicles entering and exiting the gate
of UST. Before vehicles reach the UST, there is a signal
lights near BPI Espana. The volume of private vehicles is
the largest among the type of vehicles mentioned. But the
flow of vehicles are continuously moving unlike in the
other part of the road where there is congestion of
vehicles.
On the other side of the road across the University of
Santo Tomas where vehicles are bound to Quezon City, we
included those vehicles going to the eskinita at Cayco
street, bound to CPAR Review Center. The volume of vehicles
are congested due to the traffic light across the BPI
Espana unlike the other side of the road where vehicles are
continuously moving smoothly. Same with the first road,
private vehicles have the largest volume of vehicles
passing the road.

Methodology
The method used by the group to collect the data
needed for the traffic count survey is by manually
counting each vehicle entering the Espana Boulevard. The
group used a mobile app to easily tally the different
types of vehicles entering the boulevard. The group is then
divided into two groups, and assigned one group for the
southbound lanes and another group for the northbound
lanes. Each of the group is then to tally the vehicle
entering, exiting, and just passing through the boulevard
within the 15-minutes interval. The traffic survey was done
for an hour, giving the group four sets of tallies of each
of the vehicles.

Output

The bar chart above shows the total number of

vehicles in each time interval for the northbound in
through direction. Based on the graph, 2:30 to 2:45 pm was
the time with the highest number of vehicles passed.

The following pie charts will show the percentage of

type of vehicle that passed through in the given time
interval.
For the northbound in through direction, the
passenger cars, taxi, van, FX, SUV, AUV, pick-ups, and
owner-type jeeps had the largest number in all the time
intervals.

The bar chart below shows the total number of

vehicles in each time interval for the northbound in right
direction. Based on the graph, 3:00 to 3:15 pm was the time
with the highest number of vehicles passed.

The following pie charts will show the percentage of

type of vehicle that passed in the right direction in the
given time interval.
The bar chart below shows the total number of
vehicles in each time interval for the southbound in
through direction. Based on the graph, 2:15 to 2:30 pm was
the time with the highest number of vehicles passed.
The following pie charts will show the percentage of
type of vehicle that passed in the right direction in the
given time interval.
The bar chart below shows the total number of
vehicles in each time interval for the southbound in right
direction. Based on the graph, 2:45 to 3:00 pm was the time
with the highest number of vehicles passed.

The following pie charts will show the percentage of

type of vehicle that passed in the right direction in the
given time interval.
Documentation
Sources of Error
In our traffic count session some sources of error
could be identified that could affect the accuracy of our
data. First is in miscounting the vehicles. A burst of cars
passing through the boulevard is a perfect example of a
possible source of miscounting the vehicles since some of
it could be left un-noticed. Second that might contribute
to miscounting of cars is the method of tallying, from the
2 groups, 1 group used manual tallying in which takes time
to write down while the vehicles pass. In order to lessen
that, the other group proceeded using an app in which in
one tap could register the vehicle count in lesser time
hence more accurate. Lastly lack of attention, in this case
one example would be the vehicles passing through
together with busses. This is a case in which we possibly
can’t notice the vehicle passes by along the busses since the
busses could cover and hide the vehicle.
Observations
One of the noticeable aspect during the traffic count
session was the smoke belchers. Almost all the vehicles
passing by Espana Boulevard were smoke belchers,
especially public utility vehicles. The smoke that they
emitted were very dark in colour. Another is the improper
loading and unloading.

The picture above shows an UV Express unit which has

encountered malfunction during our traffic count session.
The UV Express unit has occupied the outermost lane.
Other public utility vehicles does not use the proper
loading and unloading bay. As we have observed, most of
them load and unload on the second and third lane, which
is another cause of congestion.
Analysis
Based on the number of vehicles passing thru Espanya
Boulevard at 2:15pm to 3:15pm on a Friday, it could be said
that traffic build ups as the time moves to the end of
office hours. This is supported by the following evidence,
a majority of the public utility vehicles (Jeepneys, UVs,
and Busses) passing thru Espanya Boulevard came from
Buendia, Vito Cruz, and Pasay – areas where there are high
business transactions. While the majority of the demand
for public utility vehicle along Espanya Boulevard came
from the University of Sto. Tomas, the supply of PUVs came
from business districts, which therefore as time nears the
end of office hours, the supply and demand for PUVs
doesn’t match up, which would cause foot traffic along
the boulevard, and longer waiting hours for commuters
going northbound.

The current situation is that the bulk of supply for

PUVs came from high business transaction areas, while
supply coming from Manila Unviersity Belt is relatively
low. The number of vehicles passing thru the avenue going
northbound at 2:15-3:15pm is inversely proportionate to
the total number of vehicles going southbound and is not
fixed at all times. It could be said in the recommendation
that one southbound lane could be used by the Private
Vehicles going North, so that they do not occupy lanes of
PUVs. It could also be recommended that creating a
supply of PUVs starting from the University belt are also
feasible.
Conclusion
We conducted the survey successfully and we were able
to determine the traffic volume for northbound,
southbound, northbound right in/out, and southbound
right in/out. The number of vehicles passing thru the
avenue going northbound at 2:00-3:00pm is inversely
proportionate to the total number of vehicles going
southbound and is not fixed at all times. For southbound,
the highest volume of traffic is around 2:15pm-2:30pm
with a total of 678 vehicles. For north bound, the highest
volume of traffic is around 2:30pm-2:45pm with a total of
540 vehicles. For southbound right in/out, the highest
volume of traffic is around 2:45pm-3:00pm with a total
of 27 vehicles. And lastly, for northbound right in/out, the
highest volume of traffic is around 3:00pm-3:15pm with a
total of 30 vehicles. Based on what we observed, the
highest volume or most congested all in all is the
northbound lane which is needed to be prioritized to
lessen congestion around Espana Boulevard.
