NAME : NOVA DILLA

NIM : 205172835

CLASS : 5D TBI

1. Media :Word Maps ( Paper and Boardmarker )

Focus :The Vocabulary

Class : 7 SMP/MTS

Word maps are an extremely engaging way of building up vocabulary

knowledge as well as provoking students into retrieving and using what they know. In
this sequence, the students are going to work on aspects of houses and the things in
them. We start by putting the beginnings of map on the board. Students the come to
the board and add some rooms to diagram as :

Bedroom

Utility
Study
room

House
Sitting
Toilet
room

Kitchen

Students should by now have begun to get the idea (even it haven’t done a
word map before this), but just to be sure, we elicit words for one of the rooms. We
can now put students in groups, and one room per group. They are given boardmarker
or paper and marker pens to add as many words as they can to the word map for their
room. It will be entirely appropriate if they think they are in competition with the
other groups to see who can find the most words. Once the word map is complete for
as full as it is likely to be, we can make sure students can say the words correctly
before going on to ask them to describe their favourite room at home. We can give
students a picture or plan of an empty room and ask them to decide what to put in it.

Word maps are sometimes usd by teachers to show students how words group
together. Getting students to build up their own maps by working in groups as we
have suggested has the added advantage of making them try to remember some of the
many words they know, while at the same time learning new words from theirs peers.

 The eff ectiveness of the media Word Maps

The level of effectiveness of the word map media is to increase the word
‘Vocabulary’ knowledge of language in the object concept of something

example, students first have to do a reading puzzle, which leads them on to complete
a story. The reading is part of an integrated skills sequence which include discussion
of language work. Students are told they are going to discuss a car journey. The
teacher asks them to the name of the parts of car. The students end up words like
mirror,tyre,indication,etc.
Students now look at the following exercise where they have to write the
correct verb in the Blanks to make up typical car Pharases. They can do this
individually or in pairs.

Acclerate Brake Check Clean Fasten

Flash Look in Overtake Sound Start

Swerve Use

You can Your car can

.............. your mirror ............... your horn .......................

.............. your tyres ............... your seatbelt .......................

............. your indicator ............... your windscreen .......................

............. your lights ............... your engine ........................

The teacher goes through the answers with the class, and then gives groups of
students the set of sentences, which they have to put in order to make story. Teacher
will have mixed them up so that she doesn’t give them out in a perfect sequence.
While they do this, the teacher goes round the monitoring what is going on and giving
help where students are stuck.

A woman was driving home along a country road late one night.
The road was completely empty except for one car behind her.

The woman thought nothing of it until the other can began to overtake.

Then it suddenly braked, swerved back behind her and flashed its lights

The woman felt a bit nervous, particulary when the car flashed its lights again.
