CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the project background and context, project purpose and

description, objectives of the study, scope and limitation and definition of terms.

PROJECT BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT

Educational institution in developing countries is a vast sector and it is

expanding rapidly. With the rapid growth of technologies, educational institutions are

still lagging behind. For identification of students they still lie on manual handwritten ID

card and files. If proper ID card system is introduced then it would be much easier to

identify a student and can track his/her progress. Therefore, in this research we

implemented advanced using of QR code and student ID generation.

Statistics shows that 42% of smartphone users have an average age of 26

years old. Thus, with the widespread of smartphones among university students, this

paper addresses the problem of such a waste in the lecture time and proposes a system

that offers to reduce it by almost 90%. The proposed solution offers a QR code for the

students to scan it via a specific smartphone application. The code along with the student

identity taken by the application will confirm the students’ attendance. This way, the

system will save not only time but also efforts that were supposed to be put by instructors

during each lecture. It will speed up the process of taking attendance and leave much time

for the lecture to be given properly.

We tried level best to make right implementation of QR code with student ID

card. Automated student ID had image capturing facility and requirements of an ID and

there is no need of hand written ID card. QR code is attached into ID card and student

personal details can be found by scanning the QR code with smart phones (downloaded

& installed QR reader software). QR code is said to be the next generation of bar code

and using QR code with ID card brought positive outcomes. While using software tools,

identity cards works fine and suitable for an educational institution as it is free. Thus, ID

card will be a perfect use of modern technology in developing countries.

Figure 1.1 shows the (Automated Attendance with SMS and Time

Monitoring using QR for Senior High School Students of Asian College)In this

system architecture there are three modules Students, Admin and teacher. In this system student

information will hide in QR Code, when student will scan QR Code at that time student

attendance will automatically store in database and at the end students attendance will be

calculated and send it to teacher for analysis.

PROJECT PURPOSE AND DESCRIPTION

In this automated system the card generation process is completely done

by the computer with the help of the software. The information of the students is stored in

the database and by this time the student ID card can be provided by the administration.

As a result there is no tension about the wastage of time and also the data manipulating

and storing is suitable for the whole process. Taking students’ attendance by university

instructors during each class is a time consuming process especially when classes are big.

Some faculty policies require this task to be performed by the instructor in each lecture.

In other words, out of the total hours that are assigned to a given course, which is
4

typically forty-five hours per semester, up to eight hours may be lost to perform this

process that usually takes around ten minutes per lecture.

The system lies between online learning and traditional learning as a

facilitation for the attendance record-keeping process, in a way that enriches the lecture

time so that it can better be utilized in giving useful materials rather than wasting the time

taking attendance. The system requires a simple login process by the class instructor

through its Server Module to generate an encrypted QR code with specific information.

This can be done at any time before the class. During the class, or at its beginning, the

instructor displays an encrypted QR code to the students. The students can then scan the

displayed QR code using the system Mobile Module, provided to them through the smart

phone market by the university. Along with the student’s facial image captured by the

mobile application at the time of the scan, the Mobile Module will then communicate the

information collected to the Server Module to confirm attendance. The whole process

should take less than a minute for any student as well as for the whole class to complete

their attendance confirmation. Smart phones may communicate with the server via either

the local Wi-Fi coverage offered by the institution.

OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT

Main Objective
The main objective of this project is to develop a Smart QR Code based attendance system for Senor

High School of Asian College integrating Android device with QR code, QR Scanner and MySQL to

store attendance results. Analyzing the attendance and monitoring on weekly or monthly basis.

Specific Objectives
This project specifically aims:

1. To develop a Automated Attendance with SMS and Time Monitoring using QR

for Senior High School Students of Asian College to make the monitoring of

attendance much easier to avoid redundancy and inconsistency of data.

2. To easily maintain attendance sheet as the attendance are electronically stored in

database.

3. To evaluate the system in terms of:

A. Functionality –securing access using username & password and executing

its functions properly.

B. Efficiency –the system running smoothly, easily retrieving of deleted data

and automatically computed the attendance history of a particular student.

C. Usability –having a user-friendly system that is easy to understand,

operate, and control for the users. The menus and other features of the

system are well-functioning. This project may be a good help for the

users.

SCOPE

The proposed system may be implemented to the Asian College , the faculty , students,

and teachers can access the system through Intranet.

LIMITATIONS

The proposed system is for Senior High School of Asian College it does not

include College student, Faculty and teachers of Asian College.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

 QR Code - a machine-readable code consisting of an array of black and white

squares, typically used for storing URLs or other information for reading by the

camera on a smartphone.

 QR Scanner–a device which is used to scan the QR codes

 Smart Phone - a mobile phone that performs many of the functions of a

computer, typically having a touchscreen interface, Internet access, and an

operating system capable of running downloaded applications.

 ID – a card bearing identifying data (such as age or organizational membership)

about the individual whose name appears thereon. — called also identification

card, identity card.

 SMS - Short Message Service and is the most widely used type of text

messaging.

 Automated- operated by largely or small automatic equipment.

 MySQL- pronounced either "My S-Q-L" or "My Sequel," is an open source

relational database management system. It is based on the structure query

language (SQL), which is used for adding, removing, and modifying information

in the database. Standard SQL commands, such as ADD, DROP, INSERT, and

UPDATE can be used with MySQL.

 Encrypted- convert (information or data) into a cipher or code, especially to

prevent unauthorized access.
