shiinti piitha
"' r- l"'Jr- I
The three utterances of shiinti/:li (Peace) have a specific purpose. The first one addresses the iidhi bhautika
aspect [body] [bhü/:lu]; the second one addresses the iidhi daivika [priia][bhuva/:la ]; and the third one
addresses the iidhi iitmika [mind ][ sva/:la ]. Thus the ordinary consciousness levels of a human are addressed.
In the muktika upani$had , Hanumana asks Shri Rama which shiinti should be chanted before and after
every upani$had. Shri Rama graciously answers that different shiinti mantras are chanted before and after
the various vedic divisions of the veda-upani$hads. They are:
[1] "viing me manasi prati$h fhitii ... etc." for the rg veda upani$hads,
[2] ''puram ada[fpJ pu am idam... etc." for the shukla yajurveda upani$hads,
[3] "sahanii vavatu ... etc." for the kr$a yajurv eda upani$hads,
[4] "iipy iiyantu mamiingiini ... etc." for the siima veda upani$hads, and
[5] "bhadrankarebhish shruyiima... etc." for the atharva veda upani$hads.
1/ 7
A number of chanting süktas are from the taittirzya or the mahii niiriiya1:za upani$hads which belong to the
kr$hr:1a yajurv eda. Hence the peace chant "sahanii vavatu" is often chanted before and after süktas wherever
such süktas are from these concemed upani$hads. Why should we chant a special "peace chant" before and
after the upani$had? There are two main reasons. One is to signify whilst chanting that "NOW the
following portion is from the upani$ha<f'. Why so? Because the upani$had is the final creme de la creme or
the summum bonum of the entire veda shiikhii (vedic branch). It merits a special announcement so to say.
The upani$had is given so much importance because one can attain self realization merely by ruminating on
its meaning. So powerful and potent are its words. Secondly, it is to alert everyone to listen as in: "hear ye,
hear ye, hear ye ... the sacred and holy upani$had will now be chanted ... drop whatever you are doing and
listen to the sacred chants". The words "OM shiintish shiintish shiinti"/:li..." create the ambience and settle our
body, prii a and mind to focus onto the upani$hadic chants.
A third smaller reason concems the performance of mantra siidhanii. Any mantra with bija-ak$haras is
chanted with a "sampufa ". "Sampufa" means box. The mantra is a diamond or a precious jewel. It should
be safeguarded in a "box" so to say. Thus, the opening shiinti is the opening of the box... the mantra itself is
the precious jewel and the closing shiinti is the closing of the box after putting back the jewel in it safely.
This procedure is believed to lend power to us and efficacy to our mantra siidhanii. Accordingly, it is
believed that the precious jewel of the upani$had should be carefully "opened" from its box which is to be
"closed" later. The precious jewel must be "protected" at all times.
Whatever be the reasons, for all veda chanters it is enough to know that the veda-puru$ha Himself as the
Ri:i.ma-avatiira has ordained the chanting of specific shiintis before and after the different upani$hads.
The feeling underlying the sahanii vavatu chant is of utter selflessness. Let us proceed together, let us
progress together, let us eat together (by sharing everything available); let us perform noble and worthy
deeds together; let our performance speak for itself by our brilliant vibrations and our collective dazzling
aura. And let us all perform these extraordinary tasks without feeling jealous of each other as we are all
ONE!!
