D’ GENIUS STORY
ENGR. EUGENIO “GENIO” D. MATALINO

Eugenio D. Matalino also was known as Genio was a consistent honor student from grade
school up to high school. When he went up to college, he took up the course, Bachelor of
Science in Civil Engineering. Throughout his college years, he consistently excelled in his
studies wherein he was chosen to represent his school in different competitions and awarded as
the champion in the National Civil Engineering Quiz Show. Later on, He graduated as Summa
Cum Laude with flying colors in his school. Later on, he took up the November Board
Examination and got the first place out of all the examinees. Indeed Genio was an outstanding
and gifted student wherein he always excels in his studies.
After he got his license, he immediately got his first job as an engineer and assigned in
Davao. He will be long gone from home because the project site was isolated from the city and
will run more than a year. He walks hundreds of kilometers in the morning to go to the project
location wherein there are lots of wild animals along the way. When he arrived at the project site,
there are a lot of conflicts he encountered.
There is no signal, no internet connection, no television, and even his workers speaks a
different dialect. This is the first time Genio will be apart from his family and work to a culture
he doesn’t even know. He is alone and needs a lot of time to adapt to the environment he was.
If you were to be in Engr. Genio’s place that is having struggles mentioned above, will
you resign or not resign?

If I were to be in Engr, Eugenio D. Mathalino, I will not resign. Because away from my
family will make me learn a lot of things in life and experience the realities to it. I will learn how
to be independent and how to live alone. Yes, I love my family; that's why I'm doing the best that
I can, not only for them but also for my growth as a whole being. At first, it's tough to cope up
with the environment especially with the language barrier, but eventually, I can learn their
culture and how to communicate with them. Since I am a smart and excellent person, I can study
their language and their culture in my spare time through the help of my workers. Staying in my
job makes me experience and learn how to deal with my workers as I continue my journey as a
civil engineer in the future. Also, walking hundreds of kilometers will make me strong and
healthy. Yes, it may be hard at first, but if you always avoid problems in life, you will never
learn. You can use it to become a better person. There is no other way but the hard way.
