1. General
This user manual describes details of testing ABB REF630 relays with the OMICRON
Protection Test Template. General information on the usage of OMICRON Protection Testing Library
items can be found in the OMICRON PTL user manual.

The template has been tested with the following relay:

Manufacturer: ABB
Model: REF630
Firmware Version: 1.2.0.18

2. Software and Hardware Requirements

To use this template, you must have a valid test license for the OMICRON Test Universe 2.40 software or
higher versions and the following test modules:
 Control Center
 Quick CMC

5. XRIO Converter
The Test Object already contains the ABB REF630 XRIO Converter, which includes setting parameters
of the modelled protection relay. The setting parameters are built as an image of the PCM600 software.

The Standard Filter for XRIO Files can be used for importing settings into the Relay Parameter
Section.

Note: The import for the parameter values of the analog input module AIM_2 is supported for a relay
using the 5I_4U configuration. If your relay has a different configuration, the parameter values of the
AIM_2 section have to be set manually.

5.1 Specialties of the Additional Information block

Current protection configuration

The Current protection configuration block contains the activation flags for the Start value Mult
parameters of EFHPTOC, EFLPTOC, EFIPTOC, DEFHPDEF, DEFLPDEF, PHLPTOC, PHHPTOC,
PHIPTOC, DPHHPDOC, DPHLPDOC and NSPTOC protection functions. If these parameters are
configured in the Application Configuration section of the PCM600 relay software, set this to true in
converter. When a Start value Mult flag is activated, the start value of the corresponding protection
function is multiplied with the Start value Mult parameter.

6. Specific Protection Tests

6.1 DEFxPDEF Directional Test

The directionality of the Earth-fault protection is tested using the Overcurrent module. Two shots are
predefined: one is in the forward and one in the reverse direction of a stage using directional settings. The
test should be assessed as passed if different trip times are measured.

6.2 Distance protection

Please make sure that the CMC’s current outputs I1 and IN are wired correctly with the residual current
input of the relay. (see Figure 1)

6.2.1 Current Start Value Test for Distance Phase Selection Method Overcurrent
The current start value of the Distance protection with phase selection method Overcurrent is tested with
the Ramping module. The Fault Impedance Relative mode is used, with a shot placed at 50% of Zone 1.
The fault current is increased until the relay picks up and then decreased till drop-off.

6.2.2 Current Start Value Test for Distance Phase Selection Method Underimpedance
The current start value of the Distance protection with phase selection method underimpedance is tested
with the Ramping module. The Fault Impedance Relative mode is used, with a shot placed at 50% of
Zone 1. The fault current is increased until the relay picks up and then decreased till drop-off.

6.2.3 Distance Characteristic

6.2.3.1 Directional test

Distance directionality is tested with the Advanced Distance test module. For most of the settings it is
sufficient to attest the difference between the forward and non-directional, alternatively between the
reverse and non-directional characteristics.
Test points for the directional test can be set similar to those shown in Figure 2 and Figure 3.
The distance direction is tested separately for fault loop A-N and fault loop A-B-C.

6.2.3.2 Trip Characteristic Test

The trip characteristic test is divided into two parts, a trip time test and a distance reach test.
Trip Time Test
Distance trip times are tested with the Advanced Distance test module. The zone trip time is tested by a
test shot placed at 90% of each active zone and 110% of all zones. These shots are set on the line angle.

Figure 4: Trip Time Test

Reach Test
The Distance reach is tested with the Advanced Distance test module. The distance reaches are tested by
Check Tests with check lines at 0°, 90°, 180° and 270°. Each check line is set to a length of 120% of all
active distance zones.

6.3 Switch onto Fault

Three State Sequencer test modules are available and activated deponent on the active SOTF mode. The
first module is used for the dead-line detection mode, the second module is used for the SOTF Detection
with CB command and the third module is used for the SOTF Distance with start detection and CB
Command.

A simple CB state control logic shown on Figure 6 was assumed. The module can extended (additional
states or binary outputs) if additional conditions are needed to fulfill application specific requirements.

Figure 6: Switch control for circuit breaker

6.3.1 SOTF with DLD Detection

This module is activated if the CVRSOF Operation mode is set to Current&Voltage and the Automatic
SOTF ini is not set to DLD disabled.
Following states are used in the simulation:

1. Operating condition : nominal level voltages and currents and wait for the reset time of the SOTF
(only in sequence 1);
2. Pre-Fault : a circuit breaker opened condition with the time necessary for the SOTF protection
function to be enabled;

© OMICRON electronics GmbH 8/9

OMICRON PTL ABB REF630 V1.001 PTT User Manual

3. Fault: a three-phase fault;

4. Post-Fault: the circuit breaker opened condition.

States above are executed three times. In the first sequence, the Pre-Fault 1 state remains for a time less
than the dead line detection time. The SOTF protection function shouldn't be detected. Therefore no trip is
expected in the fault 1 state. In the second sequence, the currents and voltages of the fault state don't
fulfill the SOTF detection conditions. Therefore no trip is expected in the Fault 2 state. In the third
sequence, currents and voltages in the fault state fulfill the SOTF detection conditions therefore a SOTF
trip is expected in the Fault 3 state.

6.3.2 SOTF Detection with CB Cmd

This module is activated if the CVRSOF Operation mode is set to Current&Voltage and the Automatic
SOTF ini is set to DLD disabled. For this test assure you have connected the CB Close Command signal
(Binary Output 1) from the CMC to the CB Close Cmd of the Relay.
The following states are used in the simulation:

1. Pre-Fault : a circuit breaker opened condition;

2. Fault: a three-phase fault condition;
3. Post-Fault: circuit breaker opened condition.

The states above are executed two times. In the first sequence, the currents and voltages of the Fault
state don't fulfill the SOTF detection conditions. Also the Binary Output for CB command signal is
simulated open. The relay shouldn't recognize a SOTF occurrence; therefore, no trip is expected in the
Fault 2 state. In the second sequence, currents and voltages of the Fault state fulfill the SOTF detection
conditions. Also the Binary Output for CB command signal is simulated closed. A SOTF trip is expected
in the Fault 2 state.

6.3.3 SOTF Distance Start Detection with CB Cmd

This module is activated if the CVRSOF Operation mode is set to Start or both and one of the distance
zones is active and set to forward or non-directional. For this test assure you have connected the CB
Close Command (Binary Output 1) of the CMC to the CB Close Cmd of the Relay.
The following states are used in the simulation:

1. Pre-Fault : a circuit breaker opened condition with the time necessary for the SOTF protection
function to be enabled;
2. Fault: a three-phase fault at 100% of line length and wait the time necessary for the operation of
the SOTF protection function;
3. Post-Fault: simulate the circuit breaker opened condition.

The states above are executed two times. In the first sequence, the Binary Output for CB command signal
simulates an open state. The relay shouldn't recognize a SOTF occurrence; therefore no trip is expected
in the Fault 2 state. In the second sequence, the binary output for CB command signal is simulates a
close state. A SOTF trip is expected in the Fault 2 state.
