1. General
This user manual describes details of testing ABB REF630 relays with the OMICRON
Protection Test Template. General information on the usage of OMICRON Protection Testing Library
items can be found in the OMICRON PTL user manual.
Any CMC test set can be used with this Protection Test Template. If a CMC with three current outputs is
used, adapting of the global Hardware Configuration and local Hardware Configuration in EFxPTOC and
DEFxPDEF Pick-up, EFxPTOC and DEFxPDEF Trip Times and DEFxPDEF Directional Test modules
is required.
3. Hardware
There are multiple possibilities of wiring a REF630 relay to a CMC test set. The advised connections are
shown in Figure 1. These connections are the default settings in the Hardware Configuration of the PTT.

4. Functional Range
Supported functions:
Three-phase non-directional overcurrent,low stage PHLPTOC
Three-phase non-directional overcurrent, high stage PHHPTOCx
Three-phase non-directional overcurrent,instantaneous stage PHIPTOC
Three-phase directional overcurrent, low stage DPHLPDOCx
Three-phase directional overcurrent, high stage DPHHPDOC
Non-directional earth-fault, low stage EFLPTOCx
Non-directional earth-fault, high stage EFHPTOC
Non-directional earth-fault, instantaneous stage EFIPTOC
Directional earth-fault, low stage DEFLPDEFx
Directional earth-fault, high stage DEFHPDEF
Negative sequence current protection NSPTOCx
Although the functions listed above are not supported by the Protection Test Template, the
Relay Parameter Section of the XRIO Converter includes all protection parameters of the relay.
5. XRIO Converter
The Test Object already contains the ABB REF630 XRIO Converter, which includes setting parameters
of the modelled protection relay. The setting parameters are built as an image of the PCM600 software.
The Standard Filter for XRIO Files can be used for importing settings into the Relay Parameter
Section.
Note: The import for the parameter values of the analog input module AIM_2 is supported for a relay
using the 5I_4U configuration. If your relay has a different configuration, the parameter values of the
AIM_2 section have to be set manually.
The Current protection configuration block contains the activation flags for the Start value Mult
parameters of EFHPTOC, EFLPTOC, EFIPTOC, DEFHPDEF, DEFLPDEF, PHLPTOC, PHHPTOC,
PHIPTOC, DPHHPDOC, DPHLPDOC and NSPTOC protection functions. If these parameters are
configured in the Application Configuration section of the PCM600 relay software, set this to true in
converter. When a Start value Mult flag is activated, the start value of the corresponding protection
function is multiplied with the Start value Mult parameter.
6.2.1 Current Start Value Test for Distance Phase Selection Method Overcurrent
The current start value of the Distance protection with phase selection method Overcurrent is tested with
the Ramping module. The Fault Impedance Relative mode is used, with a shot placed at 50% of Zone 1.
The fault current is increased until the relay picks up and then decreased till drop-off.
6.2.2 Current Start Value Test for Distance Phase Selection Method Underimpedance
The current start value of the Distance protection with phase selection method underimpedance is tested
with the Ramping module. The Fault Impedance Relative mode is used, with a shot placed at 50% of
Zone 1. The fault current is increased until the relay picks up and then decreased till drop-off.
Reach Test
The Distance reach is tested with the Advanced Distance test module. The distance reaches are tested by
Check Tests with check lines at 0°, 90°, 180° and 270°. Each check line is set to a length of 120% of all
active distance zones.
A simple CB state control logic shown on Figure 6 was assumed. The module can extended (additional
states or binary outputs) if additional conditions are needed to fulfill application specific requirements.
1. Operating condition : nominal level voltages and currents and wait for the reset time of the SOTF
(only in sequence 1);
2. Pre-Fault : a circuit breaker opened condition with the time necessary for the SOTF protection
function to be enabled;
States above are executed three times. In the first sequence, the Pre-Fault 1 state remains for a time less
than the dead line detection time. The SOTF protection function shouldn't be detected. Therefore no trip is
expected in the fault 1 state. In the second sequence, the currents and voltages of the fault state don't
fulfill the SOTF detection conditions. Therefore no trip is expected in the Fault 2 state. In the third
sequence, currents and voltages in the fault state fulfill the SOTF detection conditions therefore a SOTF
trip is expected in the Fault 3 state.
The states above are executed two times. In the first sequence, the currents and voltages of the Fault
state don't fulfill the SOTF detection conditions. Also the Binary Output for CB command signal is
simulated open. The relay shouldn't recognize a SOTF occurrence; therefore, no trip is expected in the
Fault 2 state. In the second sequence, currents and voltages of the Fault state fulfill the SOTF detection
conditions. Also the Binary Output for CB command signal is simulated closed. A SOTF trip is expected
in the Fault 2 state.
1. Pre-Fault : a circuit breaker opened condition with the time necessary for the SOTF protection
function to be enabled;
2. Fault: a three-phase fault at 100% of line length and wait the time necessary for the operation of
the SOTF protection function;
3. Post-Fault: simulate the circuit breaker opened condition.
The states above are executed two times. In the first sequence, the Binary Output for CB command signal
simulates an open state. The relay shouldn't recognize a SOTF occurrence; therefore no trip is expected
in the Fault 2 state. In the second sequence, the binary output for CB command signal is simulates a
close state. A SOTF trip is expected in the Fault 2 state.
