1 General Information
The ABB REG316 converter is designed for use with the OMICRON Test Universe 2.22 software for
testing the REG316 generator protection relays. The converter provides all necessary data for testing the
generator protection functions (see chapter 2 ) of the REG316 relays.
Note: This converter is tested with the relay described above. It may work with similar relays, too.
In any way the converter is used, follow the quick start instructions and create your test using LinkToXRIO
or start using the relay specific test template (for more information, see the test template documentation).
5 Functional Range
The ABB REG316 XRIO converter implements the following functions:
Some of the functions listed above use the RIO interface of the Test Universe software. Consequently, the
test modules are configured automatically without using LinkToXRIO.
The following functions use the RIO interface:
• 87 Biased Differential protection
• 21 Impedance protection
• 78 Out of Step protection
• 40 Field Failure protection
• 46 Negative sequence
• 50, 50N, 50DT, 51N, 51V, 67N Instantaneous/Definite/Inverse Timed Phase/Neutral Overcurrent
protection
• 49 Thermal overload protection
• 46 NPS Thermal protection
* The Transformer differential protection can be tested using the OMICRON RET316 XRIO converer
8 Converter Structure
The converter is divided into two sections: the REG316 section and the RIO section. Both sections consist
of several function blocks. The converter comes up in the standard view; the RIOplus section and the
template controller section can only be seen in the advanced view.
8.1.3.1 NamePlate
The NamePlate block contains all necessary information to identify the protection device to be tested. This
block contains the relay vendor, serial number, model, the relay location, hardware revision, software
revision and a description.
8.1.3.2 PowerSystemParameters
The number of phases, phase rotation and the nominal frequency are stored in this block.
8.1.3.3 Frequency
This block contains all necessary data for testing the over- and under frequency protection functions. All
stages of the under frequency and over frequency protection function in the relay are modeled as sub
blocks of the FrequencyElements block. Each stage sub block stores information about the pickup value,
operating time and the pickup drop-off ratio.
8.1.3.4 PhaseVoltage
This block contains all necessary data for testing the over- and under voltage protection functions. All
stages of the voltage protection function in the relay are modeled as sub blocks of the VoltageElements
block. Each stage sub block stores information about the pickup value, operating time and the pickup
drop-off ratio.
8.1.3.5 Power
This block contains all necessary data for testing the over- and under power protection function. All stages
of the directional power protection function in the relay are modeled as sub blocks of the PowerElements
protection block. Each stage sub block stores information about the pickup value, operating time and the
pickup drop-off ratio.
Each sub block stores information about the pickup value, operating time, HarmonicRestraintElements
and the operating curve.
8.1.3.12 Underimpedance
This block contains all necessary data to test the distance protection circle. The nominal values and the
CT / VT settings used by the distance protection functions can be found here. All zones of the distance
protection function in the relay are modeled as sub blocks of the ImpedanceZoneElements block. Each
zone sub block stores information about:
• the grounding factors in the GroundingFactor sub block
• the impedances in the BorderElements and GenericShape sub blocks
• the reach and phi values and tolerances in the Reach sub block
• the operating and reset delay time values and tolerances in the OperateDelayTime sub blocks
8.1.3.13 OvercurrentProtection
This block contains all necessary data for testing the overcurrent protection elements witch use the phase
current transformers. All stages of the overcurrent protection function in the relay are modeled as sub
blocks of the OvercurrentElements block. Each stage sub block stores information about the pickup value,
operating time, pickup drop-off ratio and the curve type. The sub block Voltage Controlledt OC block
contains all necessary data for testing the voltage dependent overcurrent function.
8.1.3.14 NPS OC
This block contains all necessary data for testing the overcurrent protection elements witch use the phase
current transformers. All stages of the NPS overcurrent protection function in the relay are modeled as
sub blocks of the OvercurrentElements block. Each stage sub block stores information about the pickup
value, operating time, pickup drop-off ratio and the curve type.
Note: Other values needed for customer designed test can be stored in this block.
8.2 RIO
The RIO section of the converter contains all specialized RIO functions needed to use the more
specialized test modules (like e.g. Advanced Differential or Overcurrent) provided by the OMICRON Test
Universe software.
Warning: Do not change any values in this section. The values have been set using the relay settings of
the Relay Parameter Section.
Note: Do not activate the former test object view in the advanced mode of the XRIO test object. Changing
parameters in this view could disable formulas in the RIO section.
8.2.2 Underimpedance
This RIO Distance function provides the necessary values for testing the distance protection functions of
the REG316 relay with the Advanced Distance test module. The protection functions supported by this
RIO function include:
• 21 Underimpedance
The following RIO function for testing these distance protection functions is available:
• Distance
8.2.5 Overcurrent
This RIO Overcurrent block provides the necessary values for testing the trip times of the Phase
Overcurrent function in forward direction. The protection functions supported by this RIO function include:
• 50,51,Phase Overcurrent
8.2.6 NPS
This RIO NPS block provides the necessary values for testing the trip times of the NPS Overcurrent
function in forward direction. The protection functions supported by this RIO function include:
• 46 NPS definite time Overcurrent
• 46 NPS inverse time Overcurrent
