LEARNING AREA GEOGRAPHY (6037)
LEVEL FORM 5
TERM 3
TASK TYPE FIELDWORK
TASK 1
Fieldwork on the following Hydrological elements:
1. Infiltration rate
2. River discharge
TOPICS
1. Hydrology and Fluvial processes
2. Population and Migration
3. Statistics
SKILLS TO BE ASSESSED
1. Planning and Designing
2. Measuring skills
3. Observation
4. Recording
5. Investigation
6. Problem solving
7. Critical thinking
8. Graphicacy and numeracy
9. Disaster Risk Management

OBJECTIVES
1. To make the necessary apparatus.
2. To measure the infiltration rates at three different sites.
3. To measure the discharge along any named river.
4. To assess the effects of high or low discharge on the local community
5. To investigate measures which can be put in place to control the effects of discharge variations.

TEACHER’S NOTES
1. Learners should be guided to sample any three sites in their locality and measure infiltration rates.
2. Teacher facilitates in the designing and making of apparatus for measuring infiltration rate.
3. The teacher should facilitate on the measuring of river discharge.
4. Learners should be given freedom of choice on suitable methods to be used in the field.
5. Learners should be able to illustrate collected data on diagrams.
6. The teacher should ensure safety of learners during fieldwork.
7. Please note that the measuring of discharge will require each learner to make use of assistants.
8. Learners should measure discharge either at weekly intervals or after a rain storm hourly.

9. Learners are expected to design and administer a questionnaire/interview guide on the implications
of high or low discharge in the local area.
NB The Data collected should be enough to enable the learner to show trends over time.
