ASSESSMENT #1 (30% — 1500 minimum words or more) Essay
Due date : Week 8 (Day of class, 1800, week after the noncontact week)
“The Fourth Estate concept of the press is no longer necessary in modern society.”
or
“What journalists write and say can have a strong effect on society .”
Choose one essay question, arguing whether you agree with it or not (you can agree or disagree),
and giving reasons and providing evidence of various kinds why why not
or . Back up arguments
involving data from sources, with references. Essays not having a proper essay structure will also
be penalized heavily. We can discuss it in class during our tutorial in week 6.
REMINDER: Essays not following the proper format will not be accepted and the student will be
asked to format it properly. It must be bound, have a cover sheet, double spacing, TRN font, a word
count, submission date, etc. included. Essays under the word count will be penalized; however,
there is no maximum length (but don’t go crazy!). I will randomly count the words of an essay that
looks too short. If your stated word count is quite different to the actual number of words, the essay
will be returned for resubmission and significant marks will be lost.
Quotations without both quotation marks and
references (APA style only) will be penalized for
plagiarism, handed back for resubmission and can only get a maximum 50% of the allocated mark. I
will randomly check, so please don’t even try it! It is also very easy for me to know if you have
written it or not just by reading it because I know how you write already by this stage.

mark will be partly based on how interesting your presentation is, so please free to use powerpoints
if you want to. Discuss the content and writing style, impact on you, on its audience, society, world,
etc. etc.). (i) For print stories, produce enough handouts for the class to read the story before you
begin your presentation. (ii) for radio or TV stories, present an mp3 or mpg video to play before your
presentation (and tell me ahead of time if you need a computer and/or projector). NB. Time
allocated for reading the story (print) or listening, or watching, is not
counted in the 10 minutes.
