Sample Questions for Module 3 - Exam B

Question 1. A UCF mathematics Professor (you know who!!) sampled a function f (x)
along with its derivatives. The table below gives the values sampled of f (x), f 0 (x) and
f 00 (x); they are assumed to be continuous at all x.

x 0 1 2 3 4 5
f (x) 1/2 2 -1/4 4/3 0 3
f 0 (x) -1 0 3/4 0 -2 3
f 00 (x) 3/2 -5/7 1 2/3 -2 1

Tabela 1: Sampled values of f (x), f 0 (x) and f 00 (x)

Based on this table: (fully justify your answers)

(A) Among the points sampled, which ones are local maxima and local minima?
(B) Does the function necessarily have more local extrema than the ones you found on
item (A)?
(C) Estimate the minimal number of inflection points f must have.
(D) Can you assure the existence of a point c ∈ (4, 5) such that f 0 (c) = 4?
(E) Can you assure the existence of a point d ∈ (2, 3) such that f 0 (d) = −1/4?
(F) Can you assure the existence of a point a ∈ (4, 5) such that f 00 (a) = −5?
Question 2. An ellipse, E, is determined by two positive parameters, a and b, through the
relation
x2 y 2
+ 2 = 1.
a2 b
The total area encompassed by E is given by A(a, b) = πab. An ellipse is evolving in time
through the relation
a2 b + a = b2 a + b,
keeping the rate of change of a constant at 1cm/s. At what rate is the area changing when
a = 1cm?
