CHAPTER I : ACOUSTICAL PERFORMNACES

Acoustic performances report / Rev.0

1) GOAL:

“Few People have ever experienced real comfort: Thermal, Visual or Acoustic. But once
they do, they tend to want more of it”

This document is directed to act as a tender performances report on the acoustical aspect
of this project to create an aesthetically pleasing environment suitable for social areas
without overwhelming the guests with excessive noises.

It addresses acoustical considerations for the following:

a. Control of sound transfer between vertically and horizontally adjacent units as it is

important to conserve a high degree of privacy between adjoining rooms or spaces.

b. Control of sound energy passing through the building structure.

c. Control of exterior unwanted noise entering the residential units.

d. Control of equipment noise.

2) Pertinent Standards and Regulations:

The acoustic works of this project shall be managed by using the following standards and
Regulations:

 “ASTM E 336-05” :Test Method for Measurement of Air Borne sound insulation in
Buildings.
 “ASTM E 1007-04”: Test Method for field Measurement of Tapping machine impact
sound transmission through floor ceiling.

These standards are to be used as appropriate in conjunction with the defined performance
objective to ensure that the project achieves the required levels of acoustic amenity.

3) The AIR BORNE NOISE ISOLATION:

 The air borne noise generated in a multi-dwelling residential unit can be grouped in
four categories:

i. Natural voices consisting of conversation, laughter, snoring, yelling and kids

playing

Acoustic performances report / Rev.0

ii. Amplified sounds produced by TVs, computers ,multimedia systems, home
theaters and stereos. These sound sources have strong low frequencies.

iii. Noise associated with plumbing addresses, water flow through pipes, water
hammer and plumbing fixtures.

iv. Noise due to room’s appliances generated by dishwashers, garbage chutes and
disposals, clothes washers and dryers.

 The values representing the performances of isolation between two different spaces
are the FSTC values as defined by ASTM Standards E 336-05.

 This item represents the sound transmission loss between two occupied
spaces.(vertical and Horizontal). The FSTC should not be confused with the sound
transmission class STC which represents the capacity of the acoustical isolation of an
element.

 To achieve suitable levels of acoustic isolation between spaces, the performance

ratings in terms of FSTC, presented in the below table, should be used for the specified
locations and should be greater or equal to the following values:

5) THE BACKGROUND NOISE LEVEL :

 The acoustical design goal for the HVAC systems is the achievement of a level of
background noise that is unobtrusive in quality ( in terms of frequency) and low
enough in level (in terms of amplitude) that it does not interfere with the function of
the space being served.

 The values of the background level will be represented by the Noise Criteria
curves, noted “NC”.All the mechanical equipment, including plumbing, ventilation,
elevators and air conditioning, should be designed and installed to meet with the
noise criteria levels:

*With FCU at low speed fan

With all the following collective equipment, the generated noise should not
exceed 35 dB(A) inside all the spaces excluding the bedrooms where it
should not exceed 30 dB(A):

- Lifts
- Electrical transformers
- Generators
- AHUs
- Transformer room
- Etc…

6) THE REVERBERATION TIME:

In an enclosed space, when a sound source stops emitting energy, it takes some
time for the sound to become inaudible. This prolongation of the sound in the room
caused by continued multiple reflections is called “REVERBERATION TIME”.

The reverberation time is the necessary time for a sound pressure level produced
by a source to decrease 60 dB after the generation of this source. The
reverberation time used as a reference for the calculation is fixed 0.5s if it is not
mentioned.

The reverberation time plays a crucial role in the quality of music and the ability to
understand speech in a given space. When room surfaces are highly reflective,
sound continues to reflect or reverberate.

A high reverberation time will cause a build-up of the noise level in a space. The
effects of reverberation time on a given space are crucial to musical conditions and
understanding speech. It is difficult to choose an optimum reverberation time in a
multi-function space, as different uses require different reverberation times.

A reverberation time that is optimum for a music program could be disastrous to the
intelligibility of the spoken word. Conversely, a reverberation time that is excellent for
speech can cause music to sound dry and flat.

The reverberation time in this project concerns the following locations:

NOTE 3:

 The reverberation time values are to be considered when these volumes are
empty. For achieving theses values; the following material must be taken into
consideration:

 The ceiling and the wall covering

 The floors cover (Carpet, parquet or vinyl etc…)
 The furniture (the α Sabine factor)

 The choice of the absorbent material shall be coordinated with the ID.

Acoustic performances report / Rev.0

7) THE MAXIMUM OUTDOOR AIRBORNE SOUND LEVEL:

 It should be less or equal 50dB (A) from the façade of the closest building for the
inlet and outlet ventilation

 For the cooling towers on the roof of the technical building, it should 50dB (A) at
the closest occupied space. Otherwise, acoustic enclosure ,acoustic louvers
and/or acoustic screens are required.

8) TOLERANCE OF THE MEASUREMENT:

The tolerance of the measurement during the commissioning is fixed to 3dB (A). This
tolerance could not be used in the calculation. It is applied for the site measurements
only.

2) CALCULATION

The reverberation time expected in large enclosures having irregular shapes such as
the Theme Park having a total volume of around 306 000 m3 and the height of 17
meters is around 3.5 s (with 20% tolerance)

3) TREATMENT

For achieving the recommended value of reverberation time , one of the following
solutions could be done:

 Solution 1:

The ceiling total surfaces (~14950 m2) should be an acoustic ceiling having an absorption
coefficient of αw 0.5.
Acoustic performances report / Rev.0
 Solution 2:refer to enclosed sketch

To suspend ~6994 m2 of vertical absorbent baffles to be distributed regularly in groups.

The space between two baffles should be 200mm.

The dimensions of these baffles are (1000x600x100)mm

The implementation/projection of the total surfaces of baffles on the ground SA =2098 m2

PS: As an example of baffles, refer to enclosed data sheet.

CHAPTER III : GENERATORS ROOM –Acoustic Design

Acoustic performances report / Rev.0

1) General Specification

Each generators room should be treated as follows:

- The generators should be laid on isolated concrete pads with 200mm concrete
thickness. The natural frequency of the vibration isolators should be fo < 8Hz
under the static load. These isolators could be CDM-CR or equivalent.

- The surface, onto which the isolators are to be installed, should be horizontal and
clean.

- A special attention should be given to avoid any eventual bridging between the
isolated and non-isolated pads.

- The access door to the generator room shall be acoustical door. The acoustical
performance should not be less than STC = 45dB or 2 doors of STC 40

- No exhaust pipes and ducts inside the generators room should be fixed to the
ceiling. They must be suspended from an isolated metallic structure. The
ventilation and the silencers must be taken into consideration for the selection of
the generators. If the static pressure of the generator fan is not enough, booster
fans shall be used.

- Outside the generators room, the exhaust pipes should be suspended with
vibration isolator hangers Type CDM- PHS or equivalent.

- The inlet and outlet sound attenuators should be calculated to achieve the noise
criteria stated in the acoustic performance report

- At least 90% of the total surface (walls + Ceiling) should be covered by an

absorbent material. 1mm perforated galvanized steel sheets with 100mm of
mineral wool having a density of 40 Kg/m3

2) Proposed treatment for each generators room

The following treatment or similar is highly recommended for the generators room
located in basement and ground floor in order to achieve an acceptable noise level at
the nearest occupied area.

The contractor should be responsible of the final selection of the sound attenuators
based on the final selected generators.

CHAPTER IV : COOLING TOWER YARD -Acoustic Design

Acoustic performances report / Rev.0

1) VIBRATION ISOLATION:

Cooling Towers

For The factory assembled cooling towers, it shall be laid on spring isolators.

For The field erected cooling towers, each installed elements should be balanced
and isolated according to the manufacture recommendation.

2) ACOUSTIC ENCLOSURE:

To reach the required noise level at the surrounding buildings, The Cooling Towers yard
should receive a full acoustic enclosure.

This acoustic enclosure shall be consisting of acoustic panels with the related support steel
structures and include both inlet and outlet sound attenuators, for the ventilation
requirements as follow:

 Acoustic Panels Type : PW-183

 Outlet Sound Attenuator type: ACS 20/200 or ACS 20/100
 Inlet Sound Attenuator type : ACS 20/200 or ACS 20/100

 Estimated Pressure Drop:

The selection of the cooling tower should take into consideration the additional
pressure drop through the inlet and outlet sound attenuators.

This estimated pressure drop shall be considered at least:

∆P inlet S.A ≥ 25 Pa
∆P outlet S.A ≥25 Pa

In addition, a clearance area should be provided around the cooling towers according to the
manufacturer's recommendations and for maintenance purpose.

Acoustic performances report / Rev.0

P.S. The contractor of the acoustic enclosure should be a specialist, with not less
than 10 years of experience in building such devices
