General Instructions:
(i) All questions are compulsory.
(ii) There are 37 questions in total. Questions 1 to 20 are very short answer
type questions and carry one mark each.
(iii) Questions 21 to 27 carry two marks each, questions 28 to 34 carry three
marks each and questions 35 to 37 carry five marks each.
(iv) There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in one
question of two marks, one question of three marks and all three questions of
five marks each. You have to attempt only one of the choices in such questions.
(v) Use of calculator is not permitted. However, you may use log tables if necessary.

25. Answer the following : 2
a) Why are the connections between the resistors in a meter bridge made of thick
copper strips?
b) Why is it generally preferred to obtain the balance point in the middle of the
meter bridge wire?

Calculate the current drawn from the battery in the given network.

26. An inductor L of inductance XL is connected in series with a bulb B and an ac 2


source.How would brightness of the bulb change when (i) number of turn in the
inductor is reduced, (ii)a capacitor of reactance XC = XL is inserted in series in the
circuit. Justify your answer in each case.
27. A galvanometer of resistance G is converted into a voltmeter to measure upto V
volts by connecting a resistance R1 in series with the coil. If a resistance R2 is

connected in series with it, then it can measure upto V/2 volts. Find the
resistance, in terms of R1 and R2, required to be connected to convert it into a

galvanometer in terms of R1 and R2.
28. (a) Define the term drift velocity. 3
(b) On the basis of electron drift, derive an expression for resistivity of a conductor
in terms of number density of free electrons and relaxation time. On what factors
does resistivity of a conductor depend?
29. A cell of emf ‘E’ and internal resistance ‘r’ is connected across a variable load
resistor R. Draw the plots of the terminal voltage V versus (i) R and (ii) the current
I. It is found that when R = 4 Ω, the current is 1 A and when R is increased to
9Ω, the current reduces to 0.5 A. Find the values of the emf E and internal
resistance r.
30. Two capacitors of unknown capacitances C1 and C2 are connected first in series
and then in parallel across a battery of 100 V. If the energy stored in the two
combinations is 0.045 J and 0.25 J respectively, determine the value of C1 and
C2. Also calculate the charge on each capacitor in parallel combination.
31. The currents flowing in the two coils of self-inductance L1 = 16 mH and L2 = 12
mH are increasing at the same rate. If the power supplied to the two coils are
equal, find the ratio of (i) induced voltages, (ii) the currents and (iii) the energies
stored in the two coils at a given instant.
32. The oscillating magnetic field in a plane electromagnetic wave is given by
BY = 8 X 10-6 sin (2 x 1011 t + 300𝜋𝑥)] T
a. Calculate the wavelength of electromagnetic wave?
b. Write down the expression for the oscillating electric field.
33. Find the relation between drift velocity and relaxation time of charge carriers in a
conductor.
A conductor of length L is connected to a d.c. source of emf ‘E’. If the length of the
conductor is tripled by stretching it, keeping ‘E’ constant, explain how its drift
velocity would be affected.

35. (a) State Ampere’s circuital law. Use this law to obtain the expression for the
magnetic field inside an air cored toroid of average radius ‘r’, having ‘n’ turns
per unit length and carrying a steady current I.
(b) An observer to the left of a solenoid of N turns each of cross section area ‘A’
observes that a steady current I in it flows in the clockwise direction. Depict
the magnetic field lines due to the solenoid specifying its polarity and show
that it acts as a bar magnet of magnetic moment m = NIA.
OR
(a) Define mutual inductance and write its S.I. units.
(b) Derive an expression for the mutual inductance of two long co-axial solenoids
of same length wound one over the other.
(c) In an experiment, two coils c1 and c2 are placed close to each other. Find out
the expression for the emf induced in the coil c1 due to a change in the current
through the coil c2.
36. A 2 µF capacitor, 100 W resistor and 8 H inductor are connected in series with an
AC source.
(a) What should be the frequency of the source whe current drawn in the circuit
is maximum? What is this frequency called?
(b) If the peak value of e.m.f. of the source is 200 V, find the maximum current.
(c) Draw a graph showing variation of amplitude of circuit current with changing
frequency of applied voltage in a series LRC circuit for two different values of
resistance R1 and R2 (R1 > R2).
(d) Define the term ‘Sharpness of Resonance’. Under what condition, does a
circuit become more selective?
OR
(a) Write the function of a transformer. State its principle of working with the help

of a diagram. Mention various energy losses in this device.


(b) The primary coil of an ideal step up transformer has 100 turns and
transformation ratio is also 100. The input voltage and power are respectively
220 V and 1100 W. Calculate
i. number of turns in secondary
ii. current in primary
iii. voltage across secondary
iv. current in secondary
v. power in secondary
37. (a) Define electric flux. Write its S.I. unit. 5
‘‘Gauss’s law in electrostatics is true for any closed surface, no matter what its
shape or size is.’’ Justify this statement with the help of a suitable example.
(b) Use Gauss’s law to prove that the electric field inside a uniformly charged
spherical shell is zero.
OR
(a) Derive the expression for the energy stored in a parallel plate capacitor. Hence
obtain the expression for the energy density of the electric field.
(b) A fully charged parallel plate capacitor is connected across an uncharged
identical capacitor. Show that the energy stored in the combination is less
than that stored initially in the single capacitor.
