Common name: Guruchi (Sanskrit),Amrita(Sanskrit),Gulvel(Marathi),Giloy(Hindi)

Biological Source: It is obtained from Tinospora Cordifolia,a climbing shrub belongs to


familyMenispermaceae.

Plant description:

 Roots - long thread like, aerial, arise from branches and fleshy roots.
 Bark - Thin, greyish or creamy white in colour, whenpeeled fleshy stem isexposed. The
color of bark is creamy white or grey
 Leaves - Cordate (heart shaped), membranous, juicy.
 Fruits - Pea shaped, fleshy, shiny turrn red when boiled.Occur in winter.
 Seeds - Curved, pea sized.Parts Used: Stems,

Conservation Status; This Plant Is Extinct

Distribution and habitat:

Guduchi found in(India) Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Guduchi is distributed throughout the tropical
region of India up to 1,200 m above sea level.They prefer deciduous and dry forests. It thrives
easily in tropical regions, often growing to great heights, and growing over hedges and small
trees.

Chemical Constituent:

The plant mainlycontain Alkaloids:Berberin, choline, magnoflorine, tinosporin, palmetin,


isocolumbin, aporphine, jatrorrhizine, tetrahydropalmatine.Glycosides: Tinocordiside,
tinocordifolioside, cordioside, syringing, syringing-apiosylglycoside, pregnane.Steroids: β-
sitosterol, δ-sitosterol, 20- β-hydroxyecdysone. Sesquiterpenoid:Tinocordifolin.

Uses:
 Giloy can be used with castor oil to relieve gout.
 Not just gout, giloy with ginger can treat rheumatoid arthritis too.
 Giloy is used with sugar to treat skin and liver diseases
 Giloy also boosts immunity and digestion and it treats chronic fever too.
 It is effective against diabetes and can treat eye disorders

Contraindication:
 Diabetic patients should be cautious while consuming giloy.
 Giloy may also over-stimulate the immune system and make the immune system iover-
active.
