Technology Is it Boon or Bane?

In our current generation, Having no access to some sort of technology is very rare, We use
technology to make everyday tasks more efficient. You can do your taxes and payment through
technology, You use the Internet to google your report for class, You use Social Media to connect
with people from around the world especially with your loved ones who are living far away. Our
current generation is literally born into the dependence of technology, But there are factors that
can be damaging by the use Technology, So technology is it boon or bane?

Yes it is true that Technology indeed can be very efficient, We use it in our day to day lives. As
students we are very lucky to have access to the internet because before it was easily accessible,
Students would go to the library, find the book that they are looking for and do their research. now
instead of actually doing the research, Our generation opens up their facebook, scrolling down
their feed and are sharing memes instead, promising themselves that they will start doing their
research in five minutes, ten minutes, fifteen minutes , An hour, Tomorrow passes, We had done
no research. Let’s think about another scenario, A more moralistic example. People nowadays
when they witness a big scene, bullying for example, instead of trying to help the bullied kid,
everyone picks up their phones from their pockets, presses record, posts it in their social media
platforms further humiliating the bullied kid. There are personal reasons as to whyt technology can
be damaging, reasons why are tempted by the powers of technology specifically social media and
the result being the lowering of self- esteem and in this I can speak from personal experience, I
have always been addicted to this social media platform called Instagram, It’s a platform where
you can share photos of whatever you want. When I started using Instagram in 2012, it was a
simple time, I just shared photos of my trips, holidays and various life changing experiences, I
shared my travel to Hong Kong, photos of the beautiful scenery there, the good food, Disneyland,
all of the tourist experience while I was in there, It was a simple time really, Just a young girl
sharing her experiences. Nowadays every time I scroll down my Instagram timeline All I see are
people who have their life together. Beautiful women with amazing bodies, People traveling to
such exotic places, going to Paris then the next day London, People who can buy anything they
want without looking at the price tag, Chanel, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Hermes. People who have
beautiful clothes, shoes, bags. Riding in private planes, driving sports cars. It honestly put a lot of
pressure in me, Whenever I post in Instagram I have to be my best, wearing my best clothes, Using
my expensive bags, I even tried to starve myself in order to get that perfect coca cola body, I
damaged myself, I forgot to value myself, I was so fixated to live up to the standards to these
people who have no significance in my life, I thought so little of myself that I forgot to be grateful
for what I have, I felt so bad for my family and friends who tried their best in order for me to feel
happy and fulfilled in life, I forgot about their sacrifices, I lost myself and who I was, thankfully I
had a realization just this year that there is more to life than to seek validation through social media,
I learned to be grateful for what I have and be happy of who I truly am . The damaging aspect of
technology doesn’t just stop there, There are instances where technology specifically the internet
can be a dangerous, life threatening place, Hackers from all over the world can hack into your
private information through various social media platforms, People tend to forget to be cautious
and secure their accounts and private information. Instances like hackers can go through your
personal information and use it to take advantage of them, They could frame you for a crime you
didn’t do, They can gain access to your bank account and use the money to invest illegal products
like drugs and guns, they can send spam emails to your friends and family where they edit your
face and attach to a different body performing sexual acts. We the people living in the current
generation have been abusing the power of technology. We are not just using it for our benefit,
We use it to damage not only ourselves but also others. We forget to be cautious of what we share
and what we hide from the public, We forget to respect others, We belittle others, We forget our
limitations, Instead of helping, We take advantage and find a way to go viral in the internet.
Nowadays technology instead of doing it’s job to be efficient to people, It has become a hindrance,
a hindrance to education, the workplace, It has made us forget our morals and manners, and makes
us forget to respect ourselves. We even do illegal things through the use of technology, It is true
indeed the we have abused the power of technology, Instead of technology being the robot, It is
the people who are living in this generation who have become the robots. We the generation now
do outlandish things to feed into our ego. We have become lazy, narcissistic, self -entitled airheads
just because we have abused the power of technology.

In conclusion, Technology is a boon as long as it our slave, when we control technology we have
used it for it’s rightful purpose. It is a bane when we become the slaves of technology. We as
human beings living in the modern society should know our limitations when it comes to the use
of technology. When we let a robotic entity regulate us, We will lose our morality, our dignity, our
integrity and our humanity.
